There have been several threads about getting this boolit but it always seem to lack steam. Well, that is all over now as we already have 15 committed buyers!

This will be a Mihec brass, 4 cavity, Cramer style HP mould. It will be a .454" or .452" as you will be able to choose.

Price: 4 cav. brass HP 120$ plus 20$ shipping

It will have 4 pin options, each set will be $16 and are described as follows:
#1: Large ROUND HP similar to the 434640
#2: Medium ROUND HP, midway between the RCBS 45-270SAA ROUND pin and the 434640 ROUND pin.
#3: The Mihec famous Penta pins
#4: Blank pins.

This is the official diagram of this boolit:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=13094&d=1240265835

Here are the first 15 folks to commit on the discussion for this boolit:

1&2: lead_her_fly=Skip-- 2! 4 cavity, .454", all hollow points
3: hicard-- 1 4 cavity, .452", 1 set large round pins, 1 set extra small hp pins, 1 set extra Penta pins: hicardattheskybeamdotcom
4: redneckdan-- 1 4 cavity, all hollow points
5: GLL=Jerry-- 1 4 cavity, .454", 1 set extra small hp pins, 1 set extra Penta pins: gllewis at pasadena dot edu

14: rollmyown-- 1 4 cavity .454", 1 set large round pins, 1 set extra small round pins, 1 set extra blank pins: roberto1reynardo at gmail dot com
15: WARD O-- 1 4 cavity, .454", 1 set Large round pins, 1 set extra small round pins: wolson at rfgdistributing dot com

Now, I am waiting for Miha to answer a few questions. I am sure he is busy and will get with us very soon. When he does, I will be posting his answers here.

I want to say thanks to the first 15 as we had to have their commitment before we could move this forward.

I also want to thank 45 2.1 for allowing us to use his great design. I am absolutely enamored with the 434640 and it will take a groundhog no problem @ 50 yards! :) (Check out the "results" page for my pictures there!)

So does the $120 price come with a set of pins? I am a bit unclear on that. If I were to say give me a 4 cav with the large round, and the penta pins, would it cost me $16 or $32? that's my order by the way

Cap'n,
It is $16 for an extra set of pins, my friend. So, with shipping, I am figuring, $120 + $20 + $16 =$156 total.

You are added to the list, kind sir! THANKS!

roll,

I asked Miha this question several times and the answer keeps coming back, no, they do not interchange.

lead_her_fly
09-07-2011, 07:57 AM
I was asked about dimensions on this bullet as well. The crimp groove to meplat measurement is .375".

Now, if you have a firearm with a short 45 Colt chamber, that may be a problem. Or if you try to use this in a M25/625 in 45ACP or 45AR as the diameter is large at the crimp groove. In a tight throat, that can cause a problem but it can be sized to .451" to elude that problem.

As a side note, we all know what Hornady does to make OAL with their FTX bullets, right? They trim their cases shorter than SAAMI specs. If worse came to worse, and you experience this problem, you CAN shorten your cases by a bit and make it work. I doubt anyone will have to but, guns are individuals too, so........ You may want to check yours out.

dutch41, with the crimp groove this may not be the best for the .45 ACP. Might look at the link below, which is a bullet designed for the ACP. That group buy is about to close, end of the week.

Seems to me that this bullet is better suited for a 45 LC whereas the other thread is better suited for a 45 ACP.

Seems to me that this bullet is better suited for a 45 LC whereas the other thread is better suited for a 45 ACP.

Duke, the intent is for this to be in a 45Colt, that is for sure. I do have the other boolit too and it is GREAT for the 45ACP. As cast from straight wheel weights it throws a nice 200gr (actually weighed) boolit with a CAVERNOUS hollow point.

It also has no crimp groove and the grease groove is round. With the 454640 being a tad heavier AND the square grease groove with the crimp groove, it should perform well in just about any 45Colt out there. 45 2.1 designed it to shoot POA for most fixed sight guns.

I know that I LOVE (figuratively speaking) my 434640. This one will be a favorite too, I am sure!

As I understand it, blank pins are ones that someone could turn down for a custom profile. Is there a possibility to order a set of flat pins? I know you can turn the other pins over for a flat nose, but I don't need a kickstand on a bullet mould and would prefer a dedicated flat nose set. Especially since this is a 4 cavity. Heck, for that matter, is a 3 cavity mould an option. Still good production volume but a bit lighter for longer casting sessions.

Thanks!

Shane

Poor,
No, on, um, both counts! SORRY!

Blank pins are for making flat nosed bullets and there is no 3 mould option either.

PoorGuy
09-17-2011, 08:11 AM
Actually, if the blank pins are for flat nose bullets and not for making custom profiles then that's what I was hoping for. No worries on the 3 cavity, just wishful thinking. Please confirm blank pins = flat nose so I can place my order.

Thanks!

Blank pins are the ones, that don't stick out of the bottom of the mold, and are used for casting solids (flat nose).

I did some "blank pins" with .502-700 mold. There was possible to turn profile by your self (or cut it to lenght)

I am interested in signing up for this 454640, I have been waiting for it!

But I am confused about the weight, because it started out the same design
as the BRP 454640, at 235gr HP and 260gr solid, and this seemed to be
confirmed in multiple discussion thread posts;
Post #9, Post #20 (by 45 2.1) , and Posts #24 , #25, #27, & #28.

Those who wanted a heavier boolit were directed to the “Ruger Only” buy.

Then at discussion thread post #30 it suddenly became 248gr HP and 277gr solid.
What happened?

I am in for sure at the BRP weight; I want to use this in both auto and revolver,
and no offense meant to NOE, but I would rather have an MP Brass Cramer.

Any idea when this GB will close?

lead_her_fly
09-21-2011, 09:25 PM
Cord, the group decided on the original drawing provided by 45 2.1. It is in the first post in this thread. The BRP mould is no longer available, unless as a used item, I think BRP is going out of business as far as moulds go.

Since the main focus of this boolit is to get a 45 Colt HP that will shoot to POA with a fixed sight 45Colt firearm, most of them are regulated for a 255gr boolit, a lighter one just isn't in the cards for this buy. Now, there is a great group buy going on right now for the BEST boolit for the 45ACP that I have ever cast, the 200gr Cramer HP. It is being run by Trigger Happy and he has been stealing customers of mine all over the place. He even posted in this thread! (Hey, just having some fun and kidding around!)

I completely understand about wanting a Mihec brass mould. There are none better, while I am sure that there are some as good. Also, this boolit would be great in an auto. Other than having the crimp groove and maybe needing to seat it a bit deeper than normal, it would work, that's for sure!

rollmyown,
I am not sure when the buy will close. I need to ask Miha what his schedule looks like. I would like to get this mould in our hands by, at the latest, the end of October. Hunting season here in the states for deer usually starts in November and we will need to do some load development prior to going.

I know Miha is watching the thread. He may answer directly. I will send him a pm and ask though. Standby for updates.

What were you thinking? Anyone else have some input?

lead_her_fly
09-23-2011, 05:31 AM
A bit of an update concerning the time frame for this mould. As I said earlier, I want to try to get this into our hands for this year's deer hunting season. Well, maybe! :)

Miha pm'd me and said the main holdup on production won't be on his end actually. The folks that do the pins need to have free machine time and that is where the "bottleneck" might be. We will have to wait and see how things play out as we get closer.

Miha knows that we want to have this mould, he is committed to making it, we will have the mould, this year. Hopefully, it will be by the end of October. That is the part WE are unsure about.

How does that fit in with the rest of you folks? Too quick? Too late?

This is a great bullet, I already have the 2 cavity Miha mold. Does a nice job, I can only imagine that the 4 cavity will be nicer yet. It's well worth the money. Once you've cast with brass it's hard to go back to aluminum.

As far as timing, Miha had me close three buys that I had running a few weeks ago and is currently in production on those. From what he's said it doesn't seem like there will be a holdup, so I would assume that this mold will get machined right after those already in production. Shouldn't be long.

Trig, I didn't know that Miha had made a 454640! I thought this was the first one! I have the 2 cavity 434640 in brass and that is the standard for my Marlin 1894!

I want this for my 45Colt Puma, Ruger 45 Convertible and a Smith M25 -7! Thanks for the input. Seems like I am waiting on you in order to get this in my hands! Okay,......... I guess! :D

Alright my dear friends. According to the chief mould maker, Miha, this group buy is to close in 1, that's right, 1 week from today!

That is the last status I have from him. From all I know about how this system works, that mean that he is planning on having the material on the mill around that time. Invoices to follow to your email address in the first post.

Please review them, make sure I didn't let my dyslexia get in the way ( :D ) and let me know if I need to make any adjustments.

Just to let you all know, I am really excited to be getting this mould. The 45 2.1 "640" design quite possibly could be the best thing out there for any caliber. Of course, that is just my opinion!

Really, what I like when I show off my 44Mag 434640 boolits is the "WOW" folks show on their faces when they see that cavernous hollow point! Impressive! I posted a picture of a ground hog that I shot with one at 50 yards from my Marlin in the "results" section on this forum. Can't wait to run this one through my Puma and my Ruger 45 Convertible!

I currently have the Mihec 45-270SAA clone, and yes, it is a wonderful boolit too. I just like the roundish flat point design better. Just me, and YMMV along with your opinion, and that is fine!

At any rate, I am excited to be getting this soon. Hunting season is right around the corner!

And, hopefully to make the time go by faster until we get this puppy! ;)

lead_her_fly
11-09-2011, 05:43 AM
Miha pm'd me and let me know that material is ready, waiting on cherry. He also said that pins are an issue again. Seems that it takes longer to get them now. Each mould does have more options for them so there are more to make for each group buy. (That is my observation, not his)

I wanted to take this boolit to the field in my Puma M92 this year but it doesn't look like that is going to happen.

That's okay 'cause I can take it's little brother, the 434640, in my Marlin 1894 in 44Mag. Here is what THAT bullet did from it @ 100 yards:
http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r115/Sackettwannabe/Boolits/44%20Caliber/0827111611.jpg

Just a word of advice if you are shooting the 434640 in a Marlin; don't use your Lee Factory Crimp Die. If you can, seat and crimp in separate steps using a standard seating die in both steps or, and I just saw these; Ranchdog collet crimp die. Now that is a tool I am going to have to get! ;)

Okay, just got the update from Miha!

He said that he will be machining this mould in December and ship in January.

So, it looks like we have a little bit of a wait. Hang in there friends! We will have this boolit for next deer season!

Anyone shoot the 460Mag or 454Casull? Thinking of using this boolit for it?

0verkill
11-29-2011, 03:26 AM
No, but I have given some SERIOUS consideration to getting a 454 Casull, probably a Super Redhawk or a Rossi carbine. This bullet would seem to be a great match with that cartridge. Maybe once I get the mould in hand it will be enough to push me into getting a 454.

Hbulle13, I am sorry but this group buy has been closed for a while now. If you would like one of these moulds, please pm Miha directly as he usually makes a few extras. There is a post back up the way somewhere where Miha told me to close it. If you get no response from him, let me know and we will try to work something else out. I hate to say this next part but; there are times when folks drop out of a group buy and their mould may become available.

Maybe I should start a second part of the first post for "back-up" buyers.

lead_her_fly
01-30-2012, 09:24 PM
Charles,
The size matters but only as it applies to your specific firearm. We do what we call "slugging" to find out what size we need. On the forum here, there should be some kind of instructions on how to do that.

I would imagine though, if the Ruger is of late manufacture, it would be .452". At this point, there are no extra moulds and if there would happen to be any on this run, they are kind of spoken for.

Keep watching on the other group buys for 45 caliber moulds. There will be some running almost all of the time...............:)

Penta is short for pentagon. Instead of a round hollow point it is 5 sided.

Got it changed friend!

Hey, at some point, we are going to have to stop making changes. Not sure when that is BUT, once this has gone to the machine and the pin maker, I am afraid I am going to have to tell someone that they are too late in making their request.

Let me put it out there like this: After Sunday, 3/11/2012, no more changes.

Get them in by then or forever hold your peace!

Aww geez , Lead. Every time I see a post on this thread from you on my user CP, I get this feeling. Close as we are, I am expecting a post from you saying "invoices are on the way", or "he's finishing them up now". In the couple seconds it takes to get to your post, my pulse quickens, my pupils dilate, I get distracted, and I can almost smell the burnt Trailboss and see big fat holes in.........oh wait. Sorry.....

Got mine yesterday, too. Best one yet. Couldn't wait, so I unpackaged, cleaned, lubed and got some lead ready. Cast up about 250 or so after the kids went to bed. This one had no problems whatsoever. First run and over 90% keepers! No sticking, cast at .454, nice and round, 260 grains, and the perfect length for my new model flat top .45. My 200 gr 45 HP had some issues to work through before I became really excited about it, but this one is nearly perfect right out of the gate. :)

I couldn't be happer so far. Thanks for drumming up interest, Lead! This is such a pleasure to use! Now to load and get a range report.

Impressive from a redhawk at 1090 fps. Passed thru all three jugs and still made the large hole in 5/8 plywood. 25/1 alloy. The was the small hp. The large hp at this velocity exploded into flat pieces. Still exploded two jugs though.

A second to bld451 - I ran 12# of 50% WW to 50% lead through it yesterday and got a little over 300 boolits. Using the small pins the average weight was 269 grains w/o lube. Diameter was .4545 to .4552 or about perfect as advertised. I had very few rejects and they dropped free of the mould very nicely.

Like was said, this appears to be the perfect boolit in length and weight for the new Ruger flat top Blackhawk. This is one of the nicest moulds I've worked with - and hollow points to boot!

Thanks to our honcho and thanks to our mould maker! Great product.

The different pins help with getting the proper expansion with different alloys as well. Good thing about 4 cavities and 4 different pins, I cast a few of each.

UPDATE: I'd started typing before seeing your post 45 2.1. I never thought I'd say this but I think that's too heavy. I'd be more interested in something around 100gr.

I would love to see this. I have the NOE 118gr. But I would like one around 95gr - 100gr hollow pointed and plain base. Here is the NOE one http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=93293

WARD O

I also think that the sledgehammer is too heavy for me. I shoot the 32 H&R and I feel the heaviest for this caliber should be somewhere around 120 grain. I think 2 Dogs sledgehammer is intended more for the 327 and 32-20s that can handle it.

I would prefer to see a boolit around 120-125 grains for a solid and 100-110 grains for a HP.

Miha will already have the HP pins designed and working after the sledgehammer buy.

I have the NOE HP version and one of the issues is getting mould nose fillout with an aluminum block and very large HP pins. Keeping the heat up in the point area of the bullet is difficult. The NOE mould also has three crimping grooves. I think one will suffice, two at the most. I think that the brass blocks will retain the heat better aiding fillout and if we size the HP pins correctly it should cast very smooth.

The NOE version does shoot very nicely and I do like it.

NOEs version was from one of my designs, BUT........ he took it upon himself to change the HP without any input from me. That is why you had trouble with the HP filling out.

These moulds were available in GC or PB.
Mine is a GC.
They weigh 248.5 unchecked and unlubed.
They are cast from half clip on WW and half stick on WW with 2% Sn added.

Now, on to this mould....... ;)

Got home yesterday too late to do anything but WISH!

Played hooky today (took a vacation day) and got this mould into production!

First, hot water & Dawn with a nylon scrub brush. Then, hot water rinse, as hot as you can stand or hotter, just short of boiling, and rinse completely. Pins too, at least the ones I was going to use right off the bat!

LARGE ONES!

Per-heated the mould, got the metal hot. Had about 6-8 throws that were wrinkled and after that, all bullets were good.

Oh, I forgot one part of the treatment! I use aerosol graphite, sprayed into a can lid, then applied with a Q-Tip, to the tips of the pins and their shafts.

To be honest, this mould was worth the wait. It is absolutely the best casting mould that I have gotten to this point from Miha!

Lubed and sized and empty cases are being tumbled as I type!

Pictures to follow after loading!

Thanks to all who joined in on this buy!

A great BIG thanks to Miha for making it!
