Good Day friends. First time at this, hope I ask my Question right.

Can I use the same recommended powders and grains of powders from different cast bullet manfactures for the same weight of cast bullet.......As in Lyman 420 grain 45-70 cast bullet vs precision cast 420 grain cast bullet or any other 420 grain cast bullet? Hope that wasn't too confusing. If one manufacture says 38 grains of IMR 4189 works great with my 420 grain bullet, will 38 grains of IMR 4198 work with another Manufactures 420 grain cast bullet? Thank You.

Welcome aboard.

You should be safe using the same loads. The difference will be the actual bearing surface of the boolit. Regardless of which one you use, all will need fine tuning, and few will like exactly the same load.

Maybe!! If the powder load was near max, I would start low 10% and work up. If it is a moderate load I would use it but two bullets will probably not give exact duplicate performance. Last time at the range I had 3 different bullets at the same weight and powder charge. I had three different groups at different sizes. Your bullet will work, but may have minor differences.

The same powders will work, but if the seating depth varies from one boolit to an other, I would work up from a starting load.

Technically, according to most loading manuals, the answer is no.

Howsomever, I have been doing it for 60 years. Most of my friends and acquaintences do it. I don't know of anyone ever getting in trouble by doing it.

Did I say - I do it?

But, I don't recommend it.

I would first weigh the bullets.. just because they claim they are 420 gr, doesn't mean the alloy may have changed a little bit.. you might be shooting 415's or 425's.. the larger bullets may have more variances than the smaller ones.. I've had bear creek 200 gr 40's that weigh in at 205..
