I used the "M" die for the first time today. The long front part of the die pushed the Dacron down into the case.

Do you guys use the "M" die after FL sizing and before powder dump?

What's the purpose of the long piece before the expander part?

I always flare/ bell/ expand the case mouth before priming and adding powder. I always thought the long undersized part of the M die was for alignment.

The long part expands the neck so it will be the right size for the bullet. The expander bells the opening to make it easy to start the bullet.

If you look on the end of the expander ball it will give you the diameter of the first step. For example 311 is .311. This trues and readies the neck so it gives the correct tension to the boolit. What Hurricane said.

Did your die not come with instructions? If not, e-mail Lyman and they will snail-mail a set of die instructions that includes the M-die.

Also, their web-site has a picture that shows the die's three, distinct operations: Size, expand, flare. I have yet found a need to flare.

I use the M-die after NSing or FL sizing, cleaning primer pockets and inspecting the case. After the M-die use I then prime the case, charge it with powder, put in dacron and seat the bullet.
