The picture shows a 5 shot group I did at 600 yards. Very tight except for one about 8 inches down and to the left. What I am wondering is what's the best size groups one can reasonably exspect to acheive at 700, 800, 900 and 1000 yards given zero wind, the best ammo you can make with bp or bp substitutes and plain base cast bullets, and of course a quality rifle in the hands of someone who can shoot. This is with tang peep sights off a bench.

I put three into that size at 500 one day while sighting. I was pretty happy.

I have shot several 600 yard matches both from bench rests and prone. These were 10 shot matches. My best score firing prone is a 99 6X. The bench rest matches were for tightest group and my best 600 yard group to date is 6.95" for 10 shots. Both were shot with a Shiloh Long range express in 45-70. I would say that my average 600 yard groups were in the area of 8 to 9 inches though.

Thanks for the info NickSS. I have only recently done some long range shooting and was gob smacked when I went down range and saw the results I posted above. Afterwards I shot some long range matches out to 900 meters and was relatively unprepared. At 900 meters I would get a shot on paper, adjust elevation and windage, only to be rewarded by no hit on paper at all on the next shot. I didn't have time to see how my gun grouped at those distances before the matches.

I'm guessing it's fair to say you should get at least 2MOA in a dead wind.

I would say then that you need to drive to Raton one year and walk off with all the 'goodies' there in the Creedmoor Match![smilie=s:
