I'm about to acquire a Ruger #1 9.3 x 74R and would like to shoot some some cast loads in it. A guide to a reliable source as well as first hand knowledge would be helpful.

Thanks

Great detailed information in a quick, helpful response. Not a surprise for this forum.

My shooting with the 9.3x74R has always been with plain base bullets, or jacketed. I now have two or three gas checked molds, and a bunch of gas checked bullets cast, but have shot none of them. I will probably get some of it done this winter.

I have used RL15 and IMR 4064 with good success and J bulluets. Cast, I have only tried Accurate's 5744. My mold is a 270 grain with a GC, by Mountain molds. Data as follows;
34.0 gr. 1837fps / 046 ex sp. / 017 std dev. / 1.25" group, I worked up to a max of,
36.0 gr. 1927fps / 041 ex sp. / 016 std.dev. / 2.0" group;
all groups shot were 5 shots. ave for 3 each (15 shots each total)
I intend, when time permits, to try IMR 3031 and IMR 4064, 2 powders which have always done well for me and cast bullets.
5744 is always a good powder to start, but I always get alot of kernals in the bore. I have tried all the "suggestions", heavy crimp for more complete burn, and, keep upping the charge until you get a clean burn. Both have not really worked all that well. but even with that, I still use it, as it gives me good uniformity and accuracy.
For the record, Rifle: Ruger No.1 / Primer: Rem 9 1/2M / Brass: Hornady
Keep us posted on how it works out for you.

Thanks, Crash. Lots of details from experience there. I'm learning that the cast bullet selection for the .366 is not huge.

Not as much as the more popular calibers, but, how many do we actually need? You could go, like I did to Mounatin Molds and design your finest. Another option is Accurate molds, he has a few designs that look good, and, right now I believe, there is a GB going on, a rerun of a 9.3from N.O.E. All top notch molds and I say that as a buyer/user of all these makers and very pleased with them all.

I just bought one and I am really looking forward to shooting it. This response is great and much appreciated. I'm trying to find a good mold right now. New Brass is a little pricey, but a lot better than the $60-$70 for 20 shells. I have seen a couple of people that use a paperpatch .358 with good results. Maybe something to try.

Blammer is doing a group buy on multiple cavity gas checked 9.3 molds. Just a thought.
