I had BTSniper make me a flat nose punch for my 40 to 45 point form die and got a chance to play with it tonight. It works perfectly. Makes a perfect 285 grain flat nose bullet from an un trimmed 40 S&W brass using a 215 grain core.

I actually thought I'd end up with a little exposed lead at the tip but it fills the brass just to the rim. That's actually good since I think I may be able to make a 300 grain bullet with an exposed lead tip with this flat nose punch. More choices is always a good thing.

I had tried to make 285 HP's but too much lead was pushed up into the nose and it just wasn't working. I re formed the HP's and a few of them ended up with small holes in the center of the flat nose.

A few pics to share the progress.

That's almost exactly what I intend to form for my .44s, is a 300-ish grain SP bullet, once I return to the States and get set up. Looks great!

Finally broke out my 450 reloading dies and got all set up. Looks killer and chambers perfectly. Hopefully I'll get some more test rounds done up tonight and get to the range tomorrow for results. Skeeters and flies were killing me so I'll have to go back out later tonight after it cools off and get some more done.

Here's one loaded up and a pic next to a factory round for comparison.

Those look pretty familiar to me. I think these might be related. I'll be curious how the 285s from .40 cases shoot.

BD are you using a modified 45-70 crimp die? I've got one but I haven't cut it down yet.

How do those cast boolits shoot? What kind of velocity are you getting out of them? Might be my next project for this thing if these don't shoot well.

Jailer,

I'm running the .453 sized 290 and 300 grainers right at 2,000 fps and getting 2-3 moa using WC 297 in Hornady brass with rem 7 1'2 primers. I have lots of groups @ 100 yards with 3 shots touching and two flyers. I believe that the .09 gas port in the .450 is occasionally disrupting the .06 tall gas check. I've been waiting about 18 months now for a 45PB die from Pat Marlin which supposedly will produce a gas check .1 or taller which I will use to test this theory. I'm interested in how the extractor groove in the bullets made from .40 S&W cases will react to the gas port. Plain based boolits don't shoot well at all, and every PB cast boolit I've recovered intact has had a neat little bite out of the heel which I attribute to the gas port. Obviously not good for accuracy.

I use WC297 and cut down .284 brass for the condoms. I run the 250 FTX at 2,200 out of my 16" barrel with very good results. This bullet and velocity are an exact match to the BDC reticule on the Leupold Ultimate slam scopes, and the Nikon Omega slug gun scopes. Works very well for me.

I use a modified Lee .45/70 FCD die for everything. Without it the COAL changes each time the bolt slams home.

Much info on this round can be found at .450bushmaster.net
