Couple members here thought a rocovered bullet picture thread might be fun. Who doesn't like to look at pictures of bullets. Especially perfectly mushroomed bullets.

Extra credit is given if bullet is recovered from sucessful hunting trip.

All my bullets so far are recovered from wet newspapper, water jugs, or earth.

Nobody around me reads newspapers anymore. How many Kindles and Nooks would I have to wet down and stack together to recover a boolit from? :)

I would say 18" or two 12" blocks of wet newspaper. Depends on the bullet. I borrow from the local lions club recycled newspaper stacks. Get a good sized cardboard box reinforced with tape, line the inside with a trash bag to hold the water. Fill with newspaper and water. The newspaper will swell atleast 1.5 times it's original width so leave some room for it to expand.

BT

p.s. it's a good idea to put the stack of paper in the back of your truck before you fill with water :) it gets heavy. Thank a fellow member here for that tip. Wasn't me but makes sence. Let the newspaper soak for atleast 24 hr and you'll probably have to add more water till it is saturated.

Hey BT Sniper
I am in another forum, that is here in Australia and a fellow member asked about making swagged bullets out of once fired cases,so I just put a link to the swagging forum.
So I guess you can expect some more enquiries on the dies and subject, hope that is ok?

No problem. I only hope shipping down under isn't going to be a fortune.

Anyone else with recovered bullet feel free to share pics.

Swage On!

Did you see the size of that hole in the newspaper in the second to last pic! that was the entry hole my 176 grain 30 cal bullet made after shot from my 300WM at around 2900 FPS! It was also the same bullet I used to shoot a small mule deer that year. The carnage to that poor mule deers neck.....

Question for the OP:

how do you get those expanded, mushroomed bullets with the cartridge still attached?

In all my guns, the brass seems to stay in the chamber, and the bullets go downrange.

I am confused.

GilaMonster,

We're swaging bullets using expended cartridge cases for the jackets. There are several threads in this sub-forum on the subject that explain the whole process.

For example, we use .32 acp and .380 Auto brass for making .38 caliber bullets. For .40 and .41 caliber bullets, we use expended 9mm brass, and for .44 and .45 caliber bullets, we use .40 S&W brass. Just do some reading in the Swaging Forum and you'll find the answers to your questions.

Hope this helps.

Fred

I am hoping that someone will post a photo of one of those bullets swaged using the copper pipe for the jacket after it has been recovered from some kind of media (newspaper, clay, I don't care). I am extreamly curious as to how they will perform.

I have to stop visiting this part of the forum, every single time I finish looking at what you guys have been doing, I start looking at lathes. They are damned expensive.

It is on my to do list. My actual thoughts are to use a .264 bullet made from 1/4 tubbing for deer season this year but it is only 4 weeks away. We shall see. May try the 140 grain 30 cal made from a 9mm too??? Depends on if I have any time to make these bullets in the next couple weeks.

BT

p.s. the Hawk bullets are made form copper tubing. #4 pictured above. I wonder had it been bonded would the performance been better?

These are some recovered .338, .416 and I think an 11.2. All shot into clay banks and then dug up.
I am also looking for my photo of a .458 that went full length through a big Brown Bear.
These were all made by Bill McBride of Star Manufacturing. They were all made on Corbin presses. These were all soldered into place using Corbin hot core bond.
Essentially the tubes are cut, the core swagged and bottom closed with either a gas check of worked over with the dies, torched with propane 'till the lead melts into place and swagged again then the points formed depending on what is wanted either solid, or open point and then tumbled to clean them up.

Not the greatest pic, but here is a 270 gr .44 bullet formed w/ BT dies shot into a mud bank. Jacket was a .40 Win. Core was a 452-200-swc that was ran thru a home size die to fit the jacket.

Sectioned some 30 cal bullets the other day.

Here is a FN5.7x28 jacketed 30 cal bullet on left and 9mm jacketed 30 cal bullet on right. Both bullets started out at 175 grains and recovered was about 85 grains IIRC. They make great llight skined game bullets.
