I shot some of Paco Kelly's loads (cat's sneeze type) using 311299 cast of lead but I had GCs on them and used Javelina lube out of several rifles including A M91 MN w/31" barrel. They also worked fine in my 27 and 28.5" barreled MNs. I see no reason why you can't do it with no GC and LLA lube.

I used Bullseye powder and went as low as 1.3 gr for 235 fps. You must be aware that the bullet has cleared the muzzle when going that low before loading and firing the next shot. Another problem with that low of a load is having enough sight adjustment to zero. I was shooting at 25 yards and the rear tangent sights of the older MNs did not have enough elevation. Ladder sights on M39 Finn MNs and M1903s do have enough adjustment. Even at that low velocity the long 311299s were stabilized at least to 50 yards giving very nice round holes in the target at that range. It is a very quiet load out of those longer barrels BTW.

I also use well fire formed cases. Those cases that showed the speckled ring indicating incipient head seperation were salvaged for further use and are still in use with these very, very mild pressure loads. I've also drilled the flash holes in those cases out with a #30 drill to allow the primer flash to get into the case totally uninterupred for more uniform ignition. Those cases are used for those loads and the 90 gr SWC load only.

I settled on a load of 2.7 gr Bullseye under the 311299 for around 550 fps. That allowed zeroing with all sights and I didn't worry so much about the bullets getting stuck in the barrel. With the ladder sight on the Finn M39 I've done some decent plinking at rocks on the 200 yard berm. Accuracy at 25 yards is one ragged hole. Also you have to "hold hard" as there is a lot of barrel time and movement from the striker hitting the primer that can move the rifle while the bullet is still in the barrel. Good fun loads.

well my reduced loads without gas check are not in a 7.62x54 but in 30-30win
but as long as you size them to fit right i found i could go up to about 1500 fps estimated with no gas check

i am using a lee c309-170rf as cast at 310 if you use a c312-185 -1r or another fat 30 sized for your bore it shouldn't be a problem

as for lubes i have tried 50/50 lee nra , LLA , and my own Pete's poor man , my own seemed to do better than 50/50 fr accuracy but then i tried just strait LLA and had good results also

it sure makes for cheap shooting
i have tried air cooled wheel weight and water dropped accuracy didn't change at the tried velocities from 1350-1500 fps 1350 has almost no recoil

and any where in that range one hole groups were possible at 25 yards from my iron sighted 30-30 the biggest thing was to measure case length and make sure i selected ones the same length to shoot together

larry,i was hopeing you might lend your insight.thank you . the bullseye 2.7 grains sounds like a good place to start.
i am real tired of useing gaschecks on just plinking loads at 25-50 yards and thought i would go a different direction.

greencountrypete,i enjoyed your thoughts also,it was interesting you had very little recoil at 1350;i would have guessed not much difference between 1350 and 1500 fps. thank you.

Careful Leigh, you'll shoot your eye out! LOL They actually let you come in out of the field?

Seems like when I get loads above 1,400 fps the recoil is noticeable. Not bad, just I know the gun went off. This is with the 30/31 cal. rifles. Another step for me is about 1,900 fps. Still way better than full house jacketed loads.

Sounds like you might be getting ready for some wabbit hunting.

Greetings, I have had good results with the 311284 in a 30-06 Springfield 1903 at around 1100fps, with alox and .309 sized lino, with NO GC. Regards

10-13 grains of Red Dot make a nice little pop with no felt recoil. No filler, just load and go.

Any particular reason you want to use a long boolit at those speeds? Use one of the 32-20 boolits in pure, FB, and you don't have to worry about a gas check at all.

Wayne, no not really....i just want to. i have gone the small 32-20 boolit route and they work fine; i am interested if it will be stable out to 50 yards or so at real slow speeds.

Well from my experience...

I loaded up the 314299 which dropped at .3135 or so. MAJOR leading. Like within a few shots. My bore slugs out at exactly that: .3135 so I thought I could get away with it. Nope. I need to either find another mold or try and enlarge/lap mine to .315 minimum. And no, the duct tape (REAL duct tape: metallic tape) thing didn't work.

Slug your bore before you proceed.
