 Finally found one!

A new one is $910 through the dealer I use here. Got a like new one on gunbroker for $735. Has all the factory stuff, case scope base...

What made it a good deal for me was it comes with 100rds Hndy brass 50 480 ruger brass 3 boxes of ammo less 5 that were shot. Think they were all that have been shot in it. 3 boxes of bullets and a new set of RCBS dies.

Already have a Lee and RCBS mold. Another case of buying a gun for a mold I already had.

Try that RCBS bullet over 14 grains of HS6. It is one of the most accurate bullets I have used in my 475.

They are tough to find for a good price. After a couple of months of scouring the internet, I found a new one for $806. Let us know how it shoots. Mine is going to take some practice before i can master it. These are no cap guns.

I gave away my .480 brass. It was just not as accurate as .475 brass. It was OK, but not what I wanted. It will make good plinking brass but clean the cylinder good after.
That gun scared heck out of the owner, he never expected such recoil! :holysheep That made a good buy.
Here are my loads if it will help.
Lee 400 gr, 15 gr HS-6 and 26.5 gr 296, Fed 155 primer.
Hornady 400 gr XTP, 25.5 gr 296, Fed 155.
My 420 gr WFN, 26 gr 296, Fed 155.
DO NOT USE RIFLE PRIMERS.
Some loads are hot but where accuracy is, so work up a little at the start. The gun has done under 1" at 100 yards.

Well let's see it!
You have seen it and been here and done it yourself. You love the .475 like I do. It can do it as long as the shooter is capable. Any gun too.
So can some .500's, the large calibers are so easy to work if you ignore recoil.
I don't know what it is but the large calibers are easier to find accuracy with then the .357, etc.

That was my thought! My 454 has the same effect on some people. Their eyes are big and they hand it back before they shoot all five.

Thanks for load info, been taking notes for a few years in my reloading manual. A few lines have you noted as source. Most comes from this forum.

Just to put the .475 into perspective, a top load out of a .475 in a 3.5lb gun has TWICE the recoil engergy of a top load .44 mag from a 3lb gun.

So you're the one who picked up that BFR! I was watching that one. Congrats on a great gun (and all the extras)!

Talked to the seller he's had it for two years and never shoots it. He likes Dan Wessons has 22 I think he said. Has a few he hasn't ever shot. Wish I had that many problems.

Bear,

Enjoy the BFR. Looks like you and I were neck and neck in the bidding for that one.

The real kick in the head is the seller lives about 5 minutes from me.

My search continues.....

You will not believe the .44 mags I have seen for sale after 5 shots out of a box of factory loads! 8-)
These guns take it to a level of head splitting recoil. Some are REALLY scared after one shot.
Hold the gun TIGHT and you will learn to love it.
I let the man at the shop shoot my new .500 JRH yesterday and he was impressed.
His fingers were cut up and he thought he had a broken finger from shooting a 45-70 contender. Yet the BFR did not hurt him. He was all smiles, shook my hand and I think I have a convert.

Yup - There's more than a few used .45+ caliber magnum revolvers F/S out there, accompanied by a box of ammo with only a round or two fired !

I have shot contender for thirty years and they can be bad. I sold my 45-70 barrel it wasn't fun to shoot. Rather shoot my 454 FA, and I hold on pretty tight.[smilie=1:

Even the 30-30 shot with one hand, off hand was bad. The gun grip was not made for humans! :drinks:

I have shot a ported .45-70 16" (14" +2" brake) and preferred it as a pistol rather than a rifle. YMMV. It wasn't good for much but entertainment so it is gone.

I didn't think the recoil was "that bad" and I actually like the contender grip that was wood with the rubber rear insert. It's the one with no finger grooves.
