You can shoot 44 S&W SPL ammo in a 44 Mag. Much like 38 SPC to 357 Mag...

Red Flag Time here......"44 Smith & Wesson".

If the case heads indicate "44 Special" or "44 S&W Spec", you'll be all right. Even if the 44 S&W is the inside-lubricated 44 S&W Russian round, they are quite safe in the modern 44s. They could be loaded with black powder--and are more properly the province of cartridge collectors--but as long as you clean the BP fouling after firing, you'll be fine.

A problem could occur if the "44 S&W" rounds are the outside-lubricated (like a 22 LR) 44 S&W American caliber. These are REALLY collectible, and any collector would be happy to swap for modern ammo--probably on a 10-1 ratio.

HTH.
