I'm not sure that this is the right section...and It may have been covered by someone else...

For anyone that reloads 45 colt - I've been finding that all the newer Hornady 45 colt brass is shorter than the standard length. I'm measuring it on average to be 1.235" OAL instead of the standard 1.280-1.285" OAL from the other companies.

That can throw a louie in the works when one is working with mixed range brass.

It does however work very nicely for the Hornady 300gr xtp and xtp mag to achieve a 1.590" OAL and with the Lee 300gr GC mold - to achieve a 1.585" OAL

Yep
Hornady has been making short brass for a while now

Ever since they released the flex tip bullets
Any brass they load with these bullets is short , or at least all that I have checked

In order to get the right OAL

They shortened the brass , all the brass in that cal. instead of making 2 different lengths
For Flex Tip and non flex tip bullets

I for 1 like Hornady brass
But don't feel like ajusting my loads and die's for 1 brand of brass
So I sort it out and trade or sell it

Thanks - I thought I was going crazy.

and it was driving my me and my dies nuts

I"ve got about 250 normal length brass and about 400 short brass....

Makes for load development a little touchy,

that was until I separated all the Hornady out of the pile

If you are buying brass new, but Starline.
Note: headspace is on the rim so you can trim all your cases to the same short length. However, this sounds like a LOT short.

As john said any brass that they load with the flex tip bullets will be short.
They tell you to trim it down for loading FTX in their manual also.

Yep, it's shorter, but still good brass. I just shot some in a match this past weekend and it works just fine. You just have to adjust your crimping die to get a good crimp, since I shoot mine in a Marlin 1894CB in .45 Colt.

Hope this helps.
