Guys, I'm almost 60 and just recently became enamored (thats love for most of us) with the older mil. rifles. Ya they were there all the time but I passed them by for the newer models that were in more popular calibers. When I go to the suppliers web sites, I want one or two of so many that I can't possibly afford them all .Now I'm looking at the Schmidt Rueben k31 and reading about the accuracy potential of these battle guns. Will it ever end?How can some guys restrain themselves? What's the usual number of mil. rifles most guys have at their homes?I'm blaming you guys and this web-site. P S who was the one that said they just wanted to lay down and roll around in a newly opened crate of military rifles? Sick or what. Best wishes, Glen

I'm only 51 and I've had it for years! When I think of the '03-A3's, '09 Argentines, Ross's, Enfields, Krags and other assorted ex-mil rifles I've passed on over the years....makes yuh sick!

SKS, two Enfields, two 1903's, 3 Mausers, two sporterized one not. I really like the Enfields they have the slickest actions. I think the 03's are the second slickest. And the Mauser's, well I just really like Mausers. Have a few actions hanging around that I intend to do something with someday, nothing exotic just something I don't have.

Many years back, when we lived in an employer-owned 12-wide trailer in Yellowknife NWT, two friends were sitting on the couch at the front end, looking down the length of the "house". One asked the other how many guns he could see from where he sat.

After a considerable pause, the second guy stated "One hundred nineteen." The first gent said he'd counted 121. (These totals did not include our handguns, which were out of sight.

Most of these guns were militaries of one sort or another, maybe 80% anyway. It was a golden age for collectors of military rifles, and I've had the addiction for a long time.

Yep, we are sickos for certain-sure...

With me it was "just an 03A3" so I could shoot the mil surp bolt rifle match at the local club. Then I found out there was a WWII sniper match right after, wellll, Sarco has these nice Mosin PU snipers....OK, I'll get one. Oh look, lots of these mil bolt matches are won my Swedish Mausers......himmm Ray's has one on the rack......

LOL and so it began. 03's, 03A3, Krags, Garands, Mosins, Schmidt Rubins, Enfields, Mausers......

A Lovely addiction it is

For me,
I'm kinda stuck in the 2 centurys back mil rifles, two GEW 88's, one 1898 Mauser, one 1898 Krag and one 1897 RB. I really like the 88's and the Krags.

Satisfied? I don't think so. My wife says it is a sickness, but doesn't think it is particularly "nice".

Not sure how many I have, but I know it is less than 100. And I still have many instances of "I wish I had bought...".

I'm just a boy at 50 but have WAY more than three. I wish I had gotten in earlier but got in early enough that I have a lot of stuff worth way more than when I bought it. Nothing is as cool as old milsurps if you like history.

Buy a K-31. They are still priced reasonably and are a high quality rifle.

I've had several. In 1958 I got a $7.95 Carcano which I sporterized. In 1961 a Martini Cadet rifle which I rebarrelled and chambered to .218 Bee as a High School project. Then came a 1884 Springfield Trapdoor which was in too good shape to cut up. Those rifles are all gone now and of course I wish I had them back. Currently I have a sporterized '98 Mauser in '06 and a Martini Cadet being made into a 5.6X50R. The rifle I reload for is a sporterized Krag that shoots them 220 gr metal things at 2,000 fps and 200 gr Boolits at 1,800 fps.
I had the most fun with a hacksaw, drill press and paint cans with a MN 91/30 but someone wanted it more than I did so it is gone now.

Sadly I have been thinning down my accumulation. By the way I still have a K31 and a Mdl 1911 Swiss listed for sale in the swappin-sellin Section. The k31 is priced a little above run of the mill at $330 but it does have shipping included and it is in an unusual configuration. Check it out under my posts.

The above are just 4 pages from one Century Arms fliers. There were 5-6 decent sized importers going strong from the importation law change of 1986 to the late 90's when they began to slowly fade away as the supplies died.

you are all sick but i can help!

just pack 1 of anything you have 2 or more of up in a hard case and mail them to me or my FFL down the street if that makes you feel better.

if you send a 1000 rounds of ammo also i will insure many junior shooters shoot them so that they can share in the addiction and keep this nation strong.

I like many kick myself daily for not buying more. I have accumulated apx 30 mil-surp rifles but the numbers should be in the hundreds. During the time I had a FFL guns became a business and I lost interest in collecting, shooting and even hunting was just time away from it all. If you ever want to lose interest in guns and shooting, turn it into a business. Everything simply becomes merchandise.

Back in the 70's we used to get together on weekends and shoot metal dongs at long ranges with mil-surp rifles. Used to be allot of fun. Shooting cheapie surplus ammo through the factory irons at ranges from 2-400 yds. Not counting US rifles the most accurate best I recall at the long ranges, were 09 Argies and K98's.

OH MY HAT! You folks have done pretty well!

I have a few Lee Enfields but you folks make feel like I'm missing something! None of mine are full original military. Not even my Cavelry Carbine carries an original barrel although it appears to be an original Lee Speed carbine barrel. (Hey, that's a start isn't it?) I really want a Long Tom and a No4 in full military dress but an original carbine would be just great.

However, having one or two 1896 plus a 1902 and a 1904 SHTLE actioned rifle is not too shabby. 8-)

(The 1904 SHTLE is the predecessor to the SMLE and has a different body with an integral charger cast into the body and had the other half of the charger integral with the bolt head).

303, I was much busier with this darn stem cell transplant than expected to join the postal shoot. They collected my blood stem cells Tuesday and I get them back Sept. 21. Industrial cancer treatment is a stern master. I might get to shoot some factory stuff next week. I an anxious to test for groups on the little No.5, otherwise it cleaned up real well. 0 bolt with good headspace, bolt lugs engage equally, clip lips needed a little shaping to correct the feed but it works well now, and typical LE trigger, a little heavy but crisp.

I did order my mold from CBE. I'm quite excited as he had a discount version of the 313-174 GC single cavity on the shelf for quick shipping.

I'll be recuperating at the casting pot and loading bench.

I started with pistols inherited from my uncle: P38 in 9mm, Mauser 1934 in 32 ACP, and a Belgian Bayarde 32 ACP; I purchased a CZ82 in 9mm Mak last year; and now I have a craving for several milsurp rifles with the SKS leading the pack. Crazy business this is!

you want pistols 3 broomhandles a luger some stars and astras brownings colt army s&w and a bunch of ruger old models.

back in the 80's when all the mausers were comming in a friend had his ffl. we ordered 1 of every thing seeing prices now i should have bought 3 or 4 of everything.

we went to navy arms in wv. got in the wearhouse and picked what we wanted. even help open some creats of mausers that just came in. they even let me go through the m1's and put together 8 good matching ones . i put together more for other dealers that were there also. they offered me a job.

That was a real sweet find.

Don't remember what my first mil-sup was. Back in the mail order days I ordered a rifle from an ad in Field and Stream magazine from my school's library. I was about 13 or 14 years old. My mother had a bleep-fit when it arrived with the mail. After getting the 3rd degree when I got home from school. She never opened it or allowed me to. She wrote refused on the box and gave it to the mailman the next day. She followed it up with a stern letter and a few weeks later I got a complete refund. If I remember right it was about 16-18 bux and it included ammo.

First one - that would be the Turk Mauser I got mail order in the 70's. I was greatly disappointed, I had ordered a 7mm Mauser! It had a well warn throat and the muzzle was also well warn. It is now an 8mm-06 with a 24" barrel. Essentially got a new throat and a new muzzle by that simple operation. Cut the original stock down, put a receiver sight on it. It's still straight bolt, cock on closing. My truck gun.

Nothing wrong at all with the FAL/L1A1. I have a pre'94 enterprise L1A1 and love it to death. Just got me a metric FAL and love it too. They hardly fit in with my M16A1 clones and gobs of gew98's and 303's...but hell you gotta have at least a theme , well sort of anyhow I guess . Man, I have not thought about my Favorite FAL in a long while, I need to finish the 358 win conversion ( barrel is profiled and chambered just need the extractor relief cut made )

It is my Ugly truck/ sno-go/ winter beater Complete with Krylon camo. it is a combination of an enterprise inch cut upper on a British lower with an "Arctic" (short) stock canadian stripper clip upper ( the one in the photo is a tapco rail) custom 16" bob and a shortened gas system and assorted ABC parts such as the ambi mag release.

The FH ( Flash hider?) on the one in the picture ? yeah... well, it was a Long style Birdcage I can't recall if that is the one they call the Stolle ? anyway when I cut 2" inches ( I think) out of the gas system and moved the gas block back, I also bobbed the 21" barrel to 16", I had this annoying hole though where the old gas port was.... So I bored the inside of the flash hider out and slid it over the barrel and silver soldered it on looks like a FH but its not, it is just a sleeve to cover the hole. I got the hider with one of the parts kits I bought at the time ( I was a FFL and ordered a lot of stuff in those days not even sure which kit came with that muzzle device.... DSA used to list them to buy separate though)

if you need better pictures or more info feel free to ask either here or PM

Dan

ok I went back and looked... it makes more sense now, that was originally the "long" G1 quick detach Flash hider, since I was bobbing the barrel I could not rethread it for the hider ( since it is a QD lug and not threads ) So I used it as a sleeve. DSA has them on their web page.

I got the hider with one of the parts kits I bought at the time ( I was a FFL and ordered a lot of stuff in those days not even sure which kit came with that muzzle device.... DSA used to list them to buy separate though)

if you need better pictures or more info feel free to ask either here or PM

ok I went back and looked... it makes more sense now, that was originally the "long" G1 quick detach Flash hider, since I was bobbing the barrel I could not rethread it for the hider ( since it is a QD lug and not threads ) So I used it as a sleeve. DSA has them on their web page.

The G1's have that 'fat' grenade ring and bayo lug...you likely machined them off . The "stolle" FH is that obnoxiously big heavy grenade launching FH...you could not give one to me..they are fugly !.

sks, stag ar carbine .223, and an upper in 6.8spc for same and an M1 Garand.
I think I counted 24 posts before seeing a Garand, shame shame,
"the greatest battle instrument ever devised" GSP I think the gouberment should supply every home with one :)

That is correct,I machined all of the protrusions off of a G1 FH. I put a lot of learning hours into the old Southbend lathe on that build. It was a bunch of left overs from Various G1 and imbel kits as well as Sales items from theABC (Australian, British Canadian L1A1) section of the various wholesalers all mixed together into a "assault weapon ban" compliant "shining example of all the best features of the FAL rifle of the world."
At least that's what i told myself. turns out it is just another "FrankenFal" but one that always brings a smile to my Face and has a suprissiing number of hours in the outdoors. its allready ugly, I dont realy mind keeping it handy in the lonely places of the world, because it always works, I have fired it grabbed out of a scabbard on the snowmachine at -20 degree's it has ridden through Bogs and swamps in a rifle rack in both a SUSV and a German surplus 404 unimog. it has character but I like it.

I love this thread. I'm afraid to count my mil-surp long guns. My mistake was getting a bigger safe. It immediately begged to be filled. I just last year bought my first CMP Garand, then a 91/30 Nagant, then,,,, well you get the idea. I like the oddball stuff and some of this is really odd ball.

I had been shacking for a week before this last gun show, needing something to go straight into the vein.

Well, I GOT IT!!! It's my third GEW 88. This one a 1891/05 Danzig In the best condition of my three, inside and out. Prefect bore and all full of cosmoline, everywhere. I don't think it's been shot since WW1, especially since it didn't have a bolt head. I immediately pulled the bolt head from my worst one and shot it AND the "fix" only cost me $40.

03, 03A3, US1917, Gew 1925 Mauser, 308 Ishapor Enfield (2 of them) and a carbine Mosin. And they all shoot or will shoot cast bullets. The Gew was given to me and the last 3 rifles were bought for less than $100 ea.. With Privi and others making affordable ammo for some of the odd calibers and with the ability to reload, bargains are out there.
