i have a rcbs 30-170-fn that is throwing boolits that weigh 195gr after lub/checking. any suggestions for loads? it will be used for deer. i was thinking of using re7, but i have quite a few other powders - varget, h4350, h4831sc, re22, 5744, and faster pistol/shotgun powders. maybe some others as well.

wow that is quite a difference in weight
try working with Varget seems to work well in that case

I agree!! Have you checked the roundness of your boolits? Somethings surely wrong here, no 170g "nominal" boolit should weigh 205g even if it was cast from pure lead!

What I find works real well in my Marlin 336 .30-30 is 34g of the old H-4831 and the RCBS 30-150FN that end up weighing 161g cast from 3:1 (ww:lino) alloy.

sorry, it's 195, not 205. my bad. the boolit is round and measures out as it should. my alloy of WW always comes out heavy like this.

I checked my records for my .30-30, and find that 34g of H-4831 also worked very well with Lyman's 311291 which weighed 185g when cast from wheel weights. I suggest you start at 32g and work up. 34g of H-4831 gave me 1833fps with this boolit.

I also have an RCBS 30-180FN which is the boolit I think he means. Mine drop around 192-194. 30 grs 3031 will put you up over 1900 fps, duplicating the 303 Savage load.

well, i tried re7, varget, and 4831. none shot well in my savage bolt gun. i don't think they are stabilzing in it. best load was about 4" @ 50 yards. i think i'll look around for a lighter mold like the 30-150-fn.

thanks guys

AHA!!!
Therein may lie your problem.
I missed the point that you're shooting the Savage 30-30 boltmeister.
Among the Marlins in the safe, rest a couple of the Savages.
If you're not sizing to at least .311, preferably .312, maybe you should.
Savages are somewhat notorious with regard to slightly oversized thoat dimensions, and occasionally bore dimensions as well. Neither of mine like smaller bullets, but with 25 grains RL-7, shoot great out to 100 yards with either the Saeco #316 or the RD 165, or RCBS SIL-165.... that is, minute of rock or minute of pig, standing with open sights. Minute of squirrel to 80 yards with a rest with the RD165.
Beagle a mold if you need to...I think you'll be happy!

My Savages are a wee bit tighter. The .300 has a .309" throat and the 30-30 is tight on the neck with .311" cast, but mine are both 1935 or older 99s.

My old 340 liked the NEI 180 RN sized/lubed as cast at .310" (cast from a very early NEI mold) over either 15 gr. SR-4759 (near MOA accuracy) or 28 gr. 3031 (for 1½ MOA). Those bullets weigh 185 grains lubed and checked. In Savage lever guns in .30/30 and .303 Savage my current favorite for both target shooting and hunting is a 190 gr. FN out of a 30 year old custom Saeco mold. Cast from WW+tin (12bhn), sized/lubed as-cast at .310, and driven by the same two loads above and weighing nearly 200 grains all-up, it'll obliterate the ten ring or drop a deer with aplomb.

I should have been more specific... my two savage 30-30s are 340s...
I have a .308 99E, but a nice 30-30 99 would be very nice indeed. I'd love to find one.
I paid $60 for the .308, and it's a peach, being my first centerfire awhile back.

I notice your first post mentioned 5744 as a possibility. My 50s-vintage 340 slugs at .3085 and REALLY likes the Lyman 311466 (162gr Loverin) over 20.0 gr. of 5744. Runs around 1850 fps and produces consistent 1 1/2" groups @ 100 yds. For your heavier boolit, I think I drop back to around 17.5-18.0 gr for a starter load.

I had good accuracy in an old H&R 30-30 with the 314299 sized to .310", 10grs of Unique and a WLR primer. Good to about 100 yards. Drop was bad after that.

Here’s a post from this thread; http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=115657&highlight=LeveRevolution There’s some other useful info you may be interested in in that thread.

Got a chance to test the confirmation 10 shot strings today out of the M94 AE with 24" barrel.

Results are;

GabbyM's RCBS 30-180-FNs/197.5 gr/BHN 17.5
36 gr Win 760
R-P case
Rem 9 1/2 primer
2.522 OAL
2066 fps (corrected to muzzle)
1870 ft/lbs of energy
200 yard velocity; 1438 fps
906 ft/lbs of energy
SD 17 fps
ES 56 fps
MAP; 36,200 psi(M43)

Lyman 311041 HP/50/50 WW/pb + 2% tin/177 gr
34.5 gr Hodgdon LeveRevolution
FC cases
Rem 9 1/2 primer
OAL; 2.55
2218 fps (corrected to Muzzle)
1935 ft/lbs of energy
200 yard velocity; 1554 fps
950 ft/lbs of energy
SD; 19 fps
ES; 37 fps
MAP; 35,800 psi(M43)

A 5 shot string of LeveRevolution with the 30-180-FN bullet looked very promising at 2247 fps with 38,700 psi(M43). That's about a 190 fps gain over the Win 760 load. Remaining velocity at 200 yards is around 1600 fps with 1000+ ft/lbs of energy.

GabbyM; hard copy of Win 760 load data will be in the mail tomorrow.

New to the forum. I purchased a 94 when I was 16 with with bullets I cast for a local gunshop, the 30-06 was a bit much at 14. At 19 I traded my dad a car for it. He pasted away quite a time ago. I thought I would finally go and kill (excuse me, harvest) a deer with it. I bought a couple of boxes of rems 170gr from dicks and couldn't hardly keep them on paper. So the 94 sat unhunted for awhile. Then I thought I would cast and reload for it. A few years ago I lurked this forum and others pretty hard for data. I finally found a load for the 30-30 and the last couple of years I harvested deer with it. This has brought my confidence up to the 7ish level with the 30-30 based on the 06 and 300wm. In my testing, not being as extensive as most here I managed to acquire a little experience. In my particular rifle the faster powders like 2400, 4198, rel7, 2015 would only perform at lower velocities, to low for hunting. The slower powders like 4064, 4350, 4007ssc would only perform at their higher velocities. Maybe there is something about that case above 95% case capacity. I noticed that with the slower powders the barrel heated up faster and the faster powders the barrel stay cooler longer. Great for the hunting and plinking aspect respectively. Also, I noticed that lyman#2, ww, heat treating, and different alloy compositions had definite results in different loads. To the OP I believe the bullet you inquired about is a deep driving killer and try not to be to hasty.

I'll through my 340 loads out for you but accuracy wise it may be different. I floated the barrel by putting another screw through the back trigger gaurd into the back of the receiver. I didn't shoot it before I did that.

The powder was WC 852F (H380 speed).

311284 / 210 gr

34.0 gr
2002 fps, SD 29.2, ES 67. I didn't record a group so, it wasn't that great but, I didn't mark it as bad.

311291 / 170 gr
34.0 gr
2131 fps, SD 10.2, ES 26, group 1.25

Velocity recorded at about 10 ft.

What about a full case of H4350 under that heavy? I'd think it an almost perfect cartridge combination for cast. Just a thought. Velocity should be around 1800fps, I'd imagine.
