I just acquired a 1888 trapdoor in very good overall condition, except the bore is in sad shape from rust. That's why it sold for a good price. My question (s) 1. how difficult is it to get good orignial barrels for these guns? 2. Is it possible to reline the barrel, and if so who does it? The bottom line is I am probably going to need a new barrel or the old one bored and relined. Anyone have any answers to my questiosn?
Thanks,

I sure would try shooting it first. Use a bullet big enough to fill your grooves (so you need to slug it) with lots of lube to fill in the potholes and let it tell you for a while that it won't shoot. Some of the sadest bores seem to get better over time with shooting and cleaning.

I have an 1884 trapdoor with a fairly rough barrel.
It shoots cast boolits well. I`d try shooting it before trying to rebarrel or relining it....dale

You can't get "new" original barrels for those. Altho any gunsmith worth the title (we're not talking gun parts changers here) should be able to rebarrel one or reline the old one.
The closest you might come to shootable barrels is trapdoors.com

I made a new barrel for my 45-70 trapdoor from a blank I got from T.J.'s barrels liners. He has a three groove liner but I talked him into making a barrel blank from DOM tube. Turned it to match the contour of the original barrel, threaded and chambered and put the sights on. All that's left to do is brown it to match the receiver. This is a hammer forged rifling and should do lead bullets with very little leading problems.

Could probably use a blank from Green Mountain also:

If your just wanting a shooter the green mountain barrel would be fine. Problem is that it is eight groove and too short for a rifle. The three groove barrels are a little harder to find.

..............I bought a 1884 TD that was externally great but with a poor bore. I sent it to The Montana Rifleman and they replaced it with an externally matching barrel. Internally it's 6 grooves and 18" twist DON'T match  They have a tracer lathe and apparently used the old barrel or already had a template. The refitted it to the action, and I also had them D&T for the rear sight screws. It was enough years back that I don't recall the cost, but it must have been reasonable or I wouldn't have been able to afford it.
