I am looking for a good hunting hollow point mould for my 45-70 1874 sharps. Who makes a good one between 410gr and 500gr and has excellent lube rings. Good expansion and accuracy with alot of lube is what I'm looking for. Thanks.

You do not need a hollow point for a .45-70.

The Lyman 457122 is the famous Gould bullet. A hollow point of 330 grains designed specifically for the old black powder .45 cal cases. It has a sterling reputation as a deer killer. Cast out of 20 or 30:1 lead tin alloy and it will expand and penetrate well at black powder velocities. Now then the hunters I know who use a Sharps 45 for deer use the 500gr govt bullet or any one of a number of flatpoint designs from 400 to 500+grs and seem to do well.

The Gould bullet is the classic .45-70 bullet for deer sized game. Lyman being Lyman screwed it up by making it too small for smokeless use in most rifles (blackpowder will bump it up) and put a little bevel on the base, which most of us don't like. If you just want something for deer sized game I would have Accurate Molds or Mountain Molds make me a reasonable fac-simile two cavity of proper size in a solid point and send it off to Eric Ohlen for his multiple-cavity hollowpoint magic.

I have used the 45-70 with black powder to kill deer and elk as well as smaller critters. I do not use and have never used HP bullets. My deer bullet is an RCBS 45-325-FP bullet cast 30-1. It expands well in deer and wild pigs. For elk I use a Flat point 405 gr bullet cast from the same alloy. I have also taken one Buffalo with a 50-70 and it was shot with the lyman 450 gr FP bullet pushed by 70 gr of Shursen FFG. All the animals I have shot were one shot kills so I guess my bullets worked just fine.
