Does RCBS (or competition) make a shell holder for a press which is completely flat on top. I'd like to have one to test bullets on their nose with a Lee Hardness Tester.

I've just set a piece of 1/8" or 1/4" steel on top of the ram when I'm forming brass all the way to the hilt and it works fine. If you'd rather have such a shell holder though, I'm sure either Lee or RCBS would sell you a blank rather inexpensively. Just call one of their service reps and ask!

i used what was handy , at first it was a nickel , then when i moved a spare press out to the shop i found a metal knockout slug , i suppose one could glue something similar to a shell holder ( or in my case to the top of the spare press ram )

I have an extra shell holder lying aroundI think. I'd bet I could put a knockout slug on top and a little epoxy would do nicely to secure it. I'd not even thought of that.

Now, that's a good idea! If you ever needed that shell holder again it would be a simple matter to gently heat the slug with a propane torch and break the glue bond.

The Herter's shellholders without a primer hole were for use with, and included in, their rifle swaging dies.

I like to use the Lyman Ram Prime for priming ( an all steel unit vs. the Lee's aluminum design ).

Lyman provides with their Ram Prime what I think you're looking for. Is this what you want , you say that you want " something that is completely flat on top " ? If so, you can call Lyman and they would probably just sell you the solid shell holder unit. It slides into place into the ram of ANY reloading press that accepts regular conventional shell holders.

Ben, thanks, that's what I'm looking for, I think another member here has one he's sending me. If that falls through, I'll call Lyman. I appreciate it.
