View Full Version : .700 ***, from scratch

It is now time to post this here as im coming to a close on the project. First off about the round, its call the 700 ***. it got its name from the members here. i posted a pic of the round in chat and the first response was "***" so it stuck. the case is made by fire forming 50 bmg brass to the chamber and then trimming to 3" long. then press it into a neck sizer and seat a .700 cal 1132gr cast paper patch boolit. according to my numbers this gun with its 16.25" barrel will push that 1132gr boolit to over 2000fps and up to around 2300fps. The gun is made by me from scratch and weighs in at 15lbs. its a single shot with a shell holder bolt. the optic is an Aimpoint comp M4 and handles the recoil like a champ. the grip is a magpull grip made for an AR and the recoil pad is a limb saver. so enough talk here are the pictures.

here is a picture of a loaded round
http://a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/285067_2326263683043_1443189422_32755423_8309988_n .jpg

here is an overall picture of the gun and some ammo
http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/267235_2297652847790_1443189422_32714736_3675712_n .jpg

The scope rail that i had on the run would not handle the recoil and was smashing agenst the lug on the scope base. so i had to rethink how to attach the scope. and this is what i made to solve the problem.
http://hphotos-sjc1.fbcdn.net/251532_2334878258402_1443189422_32764513_189259_n. jpg

and last nite i got her all painted up and she is ready to go stalk some antelope now
http://a1.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/228875_2337559285426_1443189422_32769154_3626563_n .jpg

And i took it with me to BBPDS last weekend and we all had fun shooting it. these where semi mild loads as this thing can be loaded up real nasty. here is a compiled video i did of the shooting.

good eye, there was problems extraction cases. but this was not from firing it was from the parrent brass. most of my cases where made form once fired 50 bmg brass and the base of case was larger then my chamber and you could chamber the round but apon extraction it would stick. but the cases i made by fire forming new 50bmg would function perfect.

I don't know what kind of paperwork you have on that little honey, but I seem to remember something in the ATF rules that identified anything over .50 cal as being artillery or a destructive device or something like that. Shot guns shooting slugs got a special dispensation from that rule somehow, but I don't think that yours would qualify in the same way. You might want to look that up.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

JTknives
08-14-2011, 01:06 AM
it does. If its a sporting round its legal. its in the same class as the 700 nitro express. but yes normally anything over .5 is considered a destructive device.

You may have to invest in a small-base .50BMG sizing die (if such an animal exists) to bring the base back into spec before fire-forming. I have the same issues shooting .308 Winchester cases from a semi-auto in a bolt-gun.

However, if the brass you got is one-off, I wouldn't worry about it.

I dare you to shoot it without the muzzle-brake.

I seem to recall watching a video of a guy shooting a short barreled 50 BMG with no compensator present.

The recoil was such that it caused the hair-piece he was wearing to flop loose. That was one embarrassed bald-headed guy.

I like the way it looks with the camo-job; really tough looking gun.

If you were to take that bad-boy to one of the Texas Hog Hunting camps and set yourself up around a feeder or watering hole, I bet you could take out about three or four hogs with one shot if they were lined up just right.

That would be a video that would instantly go viral.

Since Australia has become the land of Retarded gun laws by the Fun Police, we are always looking for new ways to hunt pigs....And i think we just found it....
So whens it going into production?
And when do i get one?
And is using a screw in flash tube possible to use magnum primers.. ( BMG primers here are next to impossible to get )
Failing all that, sell drawings..... Id pay $100 for a set....
And try a projectile like this.....
And i cant load a pic of it off my comp????? hmmmmm

I have two Fisher Mcmillan Shell Holders sitting in the USA with nothing to do since they banned 50's in my state...(QLD AUSTRALIA)
What would you charge to chamber and fit two barrels 16.5 inches long, fit two Fisher muzzle brakes?
I was thinking about the 50 spotter necked up too .700 and making a swage die set make a jacketed .70 cal version of a .45acp Federal Hydrashock projectile.. I made a mold for a 12 ga version that weighs 660 grain (that was the pic i was trying to post)

im using 50bmg primers, best way to light 200grs of powder lol. right now my current load is using 195gr of 4831SC and a 1132gr paper patched boolit. im am going to work up so loads using W748 so i can get my pressure up in the high 50k so i can get a cleaner burn and more velocity from it. also by my calculations i can get less muzzle blast by lowering muzzle pressure. i will do that by reaching max pressure sooner in the barrel and getting a more complete burn.

What materials did you use for the bolt and receiver, and what heat treatment did you apply? Did you send out the parts for heat treatment? Any estimates on chamber pressure and/or bolt thrust? I've started drawing my own bolt action with the help of the Ottenson books and some actual firearms engineering texbooks, but I would love some info from somebody who has the "hands on" knowledge from such a fantastic project.

You don't have to work on the magazine part. Saftey Harbor builds and sells a 50bmg bolt action rifle with a 5 round mag.
They sell thier 5 shot single stack mags for $100. It would save you a lot of time.

JT is up here for the weekend, with the 700 *** of course. We spent yesterday making up some test loads with several different types of powder, we had velocities up to a little over 2000 fps and down just under 1200fps with the 1132gr paper patch slug, yes we had the chrono set up.

70grs of Trailboss was used for loads doing 1200fps, 70grs was just about filled to the bottom of the slug and amazingly easy to shoot, JT spun the brake off and gave it a try resulting in recoil about like a 12ga low brass target load. I feel if a person could hold the 15 pound rifle up they could shoot this load with the brake on.

I dont remember what powder it was or how many grains but the 1132gr PP boolit going just over 2000fps blew a 1" diameter hole through a 1/4" thick steel plate I had and didnt move the plate.

The new brake really tames the recoil and muzzle jump the down side is the blast, standing 10-15 feet away on the side video recording is almost not enough. But it is awesome to shoot.
