lyman powder charger probs

I have always used a Lyman powder charger that came with the Lyman Reloading Kit. It does not like to meter ANY powder consistently. I have to weigh every charge I drop from it. Gets annoying and is a very slow process. I have taken it completely apart and checked for machining burs, etc. Am I doing something wrong or should I get a different flavor of charger. What brands do you like or recomend?

Are you talking about the Model 55, current production?
I have one, two years old, still in the box, never set it up; yet. I'll be interested to hear what makes it work. I'm still using my 60 year old Redding.

I don't know what you're needing for consistency but I use a Lyman 55 about 90% of the time. If yours is complete and in working order it should work fine. Is it clean, as in no grease or oil anywhere?

I disassembled my 3 , cleaned em then covered every moving part with no. 2 pencil graphite !!



Super smooth !!! & consistent throws .

The trick is to use as deep a cavity as possible instead of wide so cutting is minimized .

BUT , if machining tolerances were to open a bit & letting powder get into the drum bearing surfaces it`ll bind & generally cause problems , with some powders this is inevitabily going to happen ! I own 1 powder drop that will handle H-110 with ease ,an old Herter`s

Ask what powders are working in the 55 , I mainly use em for lite small flaked (700x) & small grained (4227) type powders .

Anything else I throw lite by a grain or 2 then trickle the balance .

A LOT of people believe powder measures should be consistant within +/- .2 gr or better; that ain't gonna happen with most powders. Lyman's 55 is about as good as measures get, IF it's set and operated correctly.

Make sure the two little screws holding the adjustable bars on the drum are tight.

Exactly! I was having that problem until I kept a visual image in my head about what was happening unseen while I was trying to tweak it.
