have you ever just shot acast boolit without running the boolit through a sizer?if so how would you put a gas check on that boolit?do they make a tool that just installs the gas check?

i also read that you can just hand lube the boolits with your fingers.you just rub the lube into the groves.if my gun shoots a unsized boolit good and i can figure out how to install a gas check without a fancy sizer machine why should i not do it that way?

thanks for any helphttp://castboolits.gunloads.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Seat the gas check by hand and give the nose a tap with a rubber hammer with the base on the bench. That gets the gas check on straight. Then you can use a Lee push-through sizing die the same diameter as your bullet or .001" larger. If the alloy is soft and the case neck hard, you might can also seat the gas check when you seat the bullet.

Finger lubing is just as good as using anything else.

I know Lyman, and I'd be pretty sure that RCBS both have a stop device for using thier lubesizer to seat a gas check without lubing it. If you are going to use the Lee sizer, get one to lap out to 360 or 361, then you can seat a gas check without sizing or lubing the bullet. Yeah, you can smear lube into the grooves with your fingers, it ain't no production method, something to do for a test group or if you are bored to tears on a mid winters eve. the dies for the Lyman/RCBS sizers can be lapped out as well so that you will be sure to lube and seat a check, but do no sizing. If you get a Lyman or RCBS tool, let me know, I've got a 358 sizer I don't use, would be perfect for such a project, and cost would be right too.

Hi All!

Jeff...If you are handy with a lathe...you can make something like I did to crimp on both my homemade checks and the storebought ones.

I shoot my full power cast loads without sizing too. Oh, make the check spreader like Col. Harrison said in his book. That is the biggest improvement I have found.

thanks guys for all the info and the pictures from over at AR.im just thinking right now about what i need and what i need to do once i get my mold.you see i dont have a mold yet, all i am is a shooter up to this point.i want to keep this just a simple as i can.if i can make boolits that shoot good enough to make me happy at the range and i can still keep it simple thats what im going to do.i do in fact want t boolit thats good for hunting too.the LEE mold thats coming is a good design for that.i want full power loads with this boolit or as close to it as i can get.dont get me wrong about this casting thing,i will do what ever it takes to make them work for mehttp://castboolits.gunloads.com/images/icons/icon10.gif

Good luck with that, jeff223. The first time you shoot some home cast bullets and they group well, you're hooked. Plan on spending lots of money and expanding your loading bench.
