Finally got my own 1858 Remington!

Hi All,

Reading all this chit chat about the 1858 Remington revolvers here and a couple of other places sort of got my hankering bone wanting one. I have been looking around and when I discovered that Cabelas was having a sale on their Pietta BP revolvers and carrying around a bunch of $20 rebates, I couldn't resist any longer. I pulled the trigger on the order and today everyones' favorite big green truck stopped for me!

I was pleasantly surprised at the look of the revolver overall from the nicely figured dark walnut grip to the miles deep dark blue even finish and the bright shiny brass trigger guard. It has a bit more muzzle heavy feel to it than my Colts, but I will see how that works out at the range. I can see that I will have to get a couple of extra cylinders to go with it. And I am already drawing up plans for a cross draw holster to go on the cartridge belt that I am making for my Uberti .45 Colt SAA Clone.

So now my SA old West line up is starting to grow some and I can see that I will have to get a couple more select ones to add to it as well. So far this is where I am at.

Oh yeah, my trigger finger is mighty itchy, found a partial box of Speer .451" round ball, got Pyrodex P and Goex FFFg and several cans of #11 caps all waiting. If they would let me shoot it at the little indoor range I frequent, I could do it right now. Unfortunately, I have to wait until my next day's off next Wednesday or Thursday so I can take it out of doors.

Until then I will just have to satisfy my urges to tinker with it by making a holster, practice handling it and making sure I don't accidentally drop the hammer on a nipple.

Yep the Remington is my favorit C&B revolver bar none. I have several but my first one is a cabellas Piatta that I have had since 1990 and have put nearly 3000 rounds through it. I just installed another set of nipples as the old ones had erroded flash holes that threatened to recock the hammer. I generally put several hundred rounds a year through it since I am retired.

Hi Nick,

I will be shooting it as soon as I get time away from work and since I do cast my own, a whole lot more after that. I have plans to add it to my gunbelt along with my Uberti Colt SAA clone and as such, it will be getting a work out. I will also be adding a couple of spare cylinders to the mix just to make it more interesting. ;)

Hi All,

I got to go out and shoot my new 1858 Pietta made Remington 5 and 1/2 inch barreled revolver yesterday. I ran all 72 of the Speer .451" swaged Round Balls that I had on hand seating them over 30 grains of Pyrodex P. My revolver Powder Measure has a 30 grain spout on it. I also used Lube 103 by Young Country over each cylinder hole after adding powder and seating the ball. The resulting ring of lead that was shaved off when I seated the balls was incredibly thin so I wanted to make sure I didn't have any chainfires. Shooting that many projectiles in one sitting was also sort of a test, I have read more than a couple comments on issues with the Pietta made 1858's binding up due to fouling with repeated shots fired. All I can say is, didn't happen to me. I don't know if it was the Young Country Lube 103 or Pietta did an extra fine job on my revolver, but I could have continued firing well beyond what I did if I had more ammo without any problems.

As to the accuracy of the little revolver, the first two targets I used were a pair of Birchwood Casey's Shoot N See targets that I got when I purchased one of their Gun Refinishing Kits. I had been saving them for a special occassion and I judged this as special enough. The first one I used a 6 o'clock hold and fired the first 6 at 25 yards. All of them but one went just below the target, I pulled the last one up just a bit to make it hit the target, so the little 1858 shoots to point of aim pretty well. I reloaded and tried it again with this result.

I switched over to regular 25 yard slow fire targets and tried to see what two shots in three postitions around the face of the target looked like. The other three larger holes are three rounds from my .50 caliber Hawken, I cast up some balls for it the other day and had to get it dirty too.

I tried a few targets of opportunity and was hitting or getting uncomfortably close with each shot to whatever I aimed at so I am pretty happy with the accuracy of these little replicas. Now I need to get an 8 inch barreled one and wring it out to see just what it is capable of doing. I also want to get one of the .36 Caliber Navy versions just for fun since my Colt 1851 Navy isn't near as accurate with round ball or conical bullet as the Remingtons seems to be.
