Went to the trap shooters house today . Paid $15.00 for 75 pounds . The only questionable items are those little trophies . Never had experience with zinc . I bhn tested it and they are 15 bhn . Any input from those that have been around zink ? Might try and melt them down by themselves and see what happens .Marvin

Zinc would be way harder than 15 BHN. More likely pewter...

I would like to find 75# of pewter for $15 that is great for lead, the piece in the second picture sure looks to be pewter, it might have pewter written on it somewhere

The round stuff and cut off ends are telephone cable splices, they are nice soft lead. I was a cable splicer and scrounged lots of that type of lead.

That big weight is 5 bhn and the round disk are swipes that are about 10 bhn . Those trophies do not have pewter on them . When he cut one of the wheels with his knife it was shinny and looked like lead . But when I took side cutters to the heads and base it was not as it broke off . Is there a way to tell what they are .Marvin

I may be wrong ( not that I haven't been in the past LOL) But I would bet those trophies were made of pot metal.

I'm no expert, but those trophies don't look like pewter (mostly tin) to me ???
But that chipped away portion doesn't look like pot metal either,
Pot metal should break rough like cast Iron, I believe.
and I would assume Pot metal would be harder than 15 bhn.

I would certainly not mix those trophies with any of the "good stuff" !

Try some Muriatic Acid to test for zinc.

I have no acid at this time . I thought they would be pot metal after the search I did yesterday . But as mentioned the break does not look like pot metal . And when he cut it it did not as well . I have a old 5 pound lee pot I do not use that I might try and melt them in and then the bhn seems low to me for pewter and zinc . He did mention they were won in the mid to late 50s.Marvin

If the little pieces don't melt at low temp (tin) I would trash them and not ruin the good stuff.

Yes I can get my money back on them at the re cycler . I know I can melt lead with my hand propane torch . Can pewter or tin be melted this way ? Marvin

I have to agree with WildmanJack on the trophies being pot metal.

I've seen trophies everywhere from the early 60's to current and they all have been pot metal or aluminum.

Yes I have to agree about the pot metal . I have 5 pounds of pot metal I paid 20 cents a pound for . The re cycler said he would give me 25 cents a pound for them . So off they go .Marvin
