I bought a pound of Accurate 5744 to reload my cast boolits in my Tikka T3 and 91/30MN as the Lyman 49th edition showed that powder to be accurate in both rifles with the boolits I cast.

My T3 slugs at .308, the boolit is LEE C309-160-R (gas check attached w/.309 sizer), and I am using Recluses 45/45/10 lube. I don't plan on using filler unless I cannot obtain accuracy.

The Lyman 49th edition load chart data shows 20-31 grains (1672-2337 fps).
Questions are: Does 2337 fps exceed the 45/45/10 lube capabilities? I plan on starting low and working up without maxing out the suggested load. Anyone have a pet load using this powder?

In the 91/30 (slugs at .312), the boolit is Lyman 314299 (gas check attached w/.314 sizer) using 45/45/10 also. Lyman 49th edition load chart shows 20-32.5 grains (1513-2153 fps). Same questions as the T3.

My boolits are straight wheelweights (aircooled) with nothing else added.

Any and all feedback is appreciated.

The 2153 fps is doable. I've never shot at the 2300+ range but, I think it would be iffy. Ypur WW's won't get you to even 1600+ unless you quench them. Either buy dropping in water as your casting or by putting them in the oven in a basket at 450 - 500 and quenching in water.

I don't know what your lube is so, I can't comment on that.

slim1836,

I've been using 18-20gr. 5744 in all my 30cal milsurps for quite some time now and am very happy with the results. My boolits run from 160-210gr. and I like velocities around 1500-1600fps. No need to push them to 2200-2300fps. Lube is JPW/Alox.

Charlie,

What is your lead composition? Do you water quench or air cool?

My .30 cal. and .35 cal. rifles have been shooting bullets made from air cooled WW's at 1,600 - 1,750 fps without any leading at all for 30 yrs. with dozens of different gas checked , cast bullet designs .

Thousands of rounds.

I'm sorry, but my experiences don't reinforce your statements above.

Slim,

All my alloy is scrap. All boolits cast are air-cooled only. I have a mix of range lead, WW and pure lead. Average BHN of 16. I gascheck everything I shoot and I have pushed these boolits to about 2000fps with no leading at all. My preference is for low velocity loads. One of my best loads for a K31 is 12.5 2400 under a Lyman 311413 for about 1200fps. Shoots better than I can hold.

These are the responses I am looking for in order to reenforce what I am wanting to do.

In general, I want a load for my Tikka T3 and 91/30 MN using the molds and powder I have that will be accurate between 100-200 yards for hunting hogs and deer along with plinking at the range.

I'm not real experienced in the art of reloading and casting, but if I can achieve the above, I will have satisfied my needs.

Thanks so far for all the feedback.
