After firelapping and running a worn out brush wrapped with a paper towel, but before cleaning

Either here or rugerforum.com

They are just factory laminated Super grips.

I forgot to mention that this Blackhawk had the ridges in the barrel as mentioned in another thread here. I don't know if it was caused by the rifling cutter chattering or what, but would lead bad after a cylinder full. It shouldn't now

those aren't the ones that came with that gun are they? I thought they had some pretty plain ones on there before. When I was looking to pick it up:wink:

it had some Jay Scott fake plastic stags on it

This would really be a good one to have passed on. :)

But, it is a project and that has some value....

Besides, I can snatch the brass GF, Super Hammer, and extra ACP cylinder and still make money if I threw the rest of it in the garbage.

I haven't checked lately, but it is the only BNR grip frame that could be found on the net..

Jussbad over on rugerforum.com had an unmarked brass dragoon grip frame for a new model...I grabbed it as soon as he posted the ad...."even a blind hog finds an acorn once in awhile." It is now bolted onto my 7.5 inch 44 mag VAQUERO. It could use some more polishing and the hole for the bolt in front of the trigger guard needs to be made a little deeper. It ain't perfect, but it's close.

How much trailboss you using? What dipper? Are Those 255rf lee boolits?

Im gonna do a 45 next after this 686 im working on.

Are you seating boolits with that rubber mallet? Or just driving boolits/slugs down the bore with it?

I use the .7cc Lee dipper with Trailboss. I haven't chrono'd it, but it is very light. I found an old washer in the woods and at 30 yards, the boolits won't penetrate it. Those are the 255rf, the only light boolit mold I have.

Nice thing is that you can pick up your boolits off the ground and remelt em!

The mallet was a JIC. I have fired those cases firelapping, so I seat the boolits with my fingers. I just grabbed it because I would be doing all the case and boolit work outside. I knew that if I didn't grab it, I'd be back up the stairs to seat a stubborn one on the press.

Hello tek4260, I was one that sent mine back to Ruger for the circular grooves. Did you firelap yours completely out? It certainly looks like it from the picture. Mine looked like a railroad track was running down the barrel, so I sent it back. I think if you have to fix something from the factory, they should owe us a rebate! I thought about firelapping but I thought if you got the grooves out of the bore, it would make the rifling too shallow. Is that possible?:?:

The firelap boolits cut the lands and grooves equally. The entire boolit is coated in lapping compound.

I'm about to do my Bisley, and for the benefit of others about to do it, the .7 dipper throws 3gr of TB heaped as full as I can get it. The 1.0 dipper throws 4.5gr, which happens to be the starting load from the Hodgdon manual listed at 600fps out of a 7" barrel.

.7 or 3gr gets them out of the barrel 6 times in a row with the muzzle tipped down..
I'm seating lee 452-255rf backwards, flush with the case mouth

Now that you have fired the cases, use a punch and hammer to deprime them. Either slide them in the shell holder or just lay it upside down and punch out the primer. You should be able to seat your next loading with your fingers and not have to worry about the case sizing your lapping boolit down.

Also, I don't know what advantage upside down seating has other than maybe less mess. I need to send 2dogs a pm and ask why he seats upside down exactly. I had concerns about the sharp edge of the base hitting the forcing cone and causing undue stress. Seems the round nose would help with alignment issues, however minute. Of course that sharp edge of the base of the boolit isn't any different than the driving band of a SWC.....

By the way, I cured some of its woes

New cylinder to replace the .455 throats

Old cylinder group on the left, new cylinder group on the right

http://i292.photobucket.com/albums/mm35/tk3945/DSCN0214.jpg

Notice the lube blown on the target.. I guess the boolits were bumping up to .455 then getting slammed back down by the FC, squeezing the lube off to some extent.

And after the first 5 rounds with that 24gr H110 load.

From this past weekend. 22.0 gr with the same Mihec Ruger Only HP. I am still not 100% happy with the bore and will firelapp a bit more. It doesn't seem to lead, but isn't a mirror like some of my others.

I'm starting with 30 fired cases. Just shot six with that powder charge to make sure they all made it out before I loaded the rest. Shooting down into my sand bucket makes the powder fall forward and increases the odds of sticking a boolit, but my neighbors get upset when I use their pekingese as a backstop, so I don't have much choice.

Nose down contains the mess and reduces powder capacity so the powder can't get away from the primer and the light or nonexistant case neck tension doesn't help matters either. Seating with the base down like normal, the boolit base hits the case wall taper before the boolit touches the powder and can bulge the case if seated firmly enough. My 686 was a PITA compared to my experience so far with the Bisley. See the other thread I just started.

I haven't weighed one yet, but I have sent some to a friend and he said 307 out of straight ww. It is pretty long to take advantage of the Ruger cylinder length.
