Gentlemen,
I ordered a K31 Swiss from SOG and it will be here tomorrow. I'd like to try some IMR-7383 with 180gr Jword bullets in it (as soon as I get some brass). Any thoughts on a starting load?
I also want to try some 160gr cast (plain base). Any suggestions for this? I have the following powders available for cast loads;
IMR-7383 (not sure if applicable?)
WC-860
IMR-4198
Unique
Blue Dot
What say you??

Now see if you'd downloaded my reloading program (hint, hint and shameless plug - but hey at least its free) you'd already know. :)

Being a Lee powder dipper fan, I'd use 3.4 to 3.7 cc of 7383 under that 180 grain bullet.
I've used up to 4.0 cc under a 168 grain J-bullet, which closely approaches the factory load velocity with 174 grain bullets. (Comparing with GP-11 and Prvi Partizan commercial ammo, which are essentially identical in muzzle velocity.) It's a moderately compressed load that's definitely maximum, and I wouldn't go that high with a 180 grain bullet. Weightwise, I think it's somewhere in the 50-51 grain range. 3.4 cc is a hair under 45 grains. I weighed a few charges last week when I loaded 3.4 cc under 185 grain 8mm Group Buy boolits in 8x57. That's a slightly compressed load with that bullet seated to the bottom of the case neck in that cartridge.
The 7.5x55 Swiss is a big case, but you have to seat the bullets deeply because the rifling starts close in front of the case mouth. The bullets end up taking up a lot of powder space inside.

Ricochet:
Have you tried 7383 and a 168 Jword in a 308 Win yet? I like you use Lee dippers when I can. I have not loaded 308 Win with 7383 yet. It would seem that a 7383 load that filled to the base of the shoulder would be a good place to start. This would be with the 168 Jword bullet. Ideas?

I don't own a .308, but I agree with your thinking as to the starting dose.

................For a cast load with that 160gr boolit just use 21 to 23.0grs of 4198. OI use a bit of dacron wiht it but that's up to you. Also 10-12grs of Unique would also work.
