You will be hard presd to beat the Ranch Dog molds for a Marlin.

I've never shot anything that light out of my Guide guns. I usually use the RCBS 400 or the Ranch Dog 425.

In the Vendor Sponsor sales area there is a great mold available. The 460405 is far and away my favorite 45-70 bullet. I have one, or one very similar, from an earlier group buy. Shoots great, easy to cast, and is fat enough to make a Marlin happy.

I vote for the Ranch Dog 350 and 425. Great design and the 6 cavity molds are a good value.

Ranch Dog is all you need to know!

I use the TLC460-425-RF over a nice stiff load of RL7 and have amazing accuracy. If you are hunting, this bullet at 1600fps will travel end to end on a 180 pound whitetail. Excellent bullet.

+1 on Ranch Dog's moulds. Lube as cast with 45-45-10 or lubesize at .459 which is what I do as I have to seat the gas check anyway.

My brother and I both have 45-70 Guide guns, and we both use LBT molds in Veral's "Marlin" profile. I like the 350 gr bullet, and my brother likes the 450 gr bullet. Both shoot great!

I really like the Old West 350gr GC bullet. I developed a 4198 load for my 1895 Cowboy to take bear hunting. Success in Quebec!
2 weeks ago, I tried some of these loads in my 1885 Browning with receiver sights. 3 shot, 1 hole group at 100yds. The levergun is not quite as accurate. 2 1/2" groups at 100yds(receiver sight)

Since you are looking for 300 gr. and up take a look here:

Tom has a good selection and his moulds are great. You can order to suit your groove diameter so get perfect fit unlike a couple of mainstream mould producers that tend to make much undersized moulds.

Also, from personal experience in my old 1895 Marlin microgroove I found the Lyman 457124 at 385 grs. shot very well for me. It was my favourite boolit for that gun.

Another boolit that had a good reputation in .45-70 was the Lyman 457122 Gould HP at 330 grs.

Not sure I would trust a new Lyman mould though. They seem to be having some QC issues.

We had a group buy awhile back for the 460420. What a dandy. Good meplat, good lube grooves, plain based or gas checked. Mine cast out around 415 gr. Best I've ever used, bar none. NOE or some of the other fine custom machinists can duplicate it. Accurate and deadly.

I have 3 molds for my 45/70, and I get such good results with this pb one that I am not even breaking out the others. No gas check, 6 cavity mold, what more could you want?

That is my favorite 45-70 mould by far. Shoots great, easy to cast, and 6 cavities! What is not to like.

i got in on the 460-350 from Noe and it has been wonderful. Check with NOE, i think he has some of this mold or the 420 left. both fit well for the marlin. or use the ranch dog molds if you want to dip lube.

I have the Lee 457-405-f . Less than $20 and I couldn't be happier. It drops at .459 and is very accurate. The bases fill out perfectly and they don't need gas checks. I crank them up to hefty power levels without leading. I lube them with 16oz. petroleum jelly, 16 oz. paraffin, and 2 tbsp. STP oil treatment with a couple of crayons for color. I shoot a guide gun with open sights at 75 yards and under. It's my all around ranch load.

My best GG mold is a Lyman 451114, but then I paper patch all my rifle loads.

I got the pb and my buddy got the gc version. Love the pb so much I never cast the gc one when doing .45-70's. I have a long list of .45-70 shooters I cast for with this very boolit. Turns out it is near perfect for another friends .458 Gonic ml rifle. The gc mould will be used for the .458 Lott and .458 WM. Great boolit.

I load the RD boolits using 4759 powder. Case filling and soft shooting.

My favorite is so far the RCBS 45-405FN. Runner up is the Old west 459-350 which shoots very well in my Guide gun. I'm still playing with the NOE 460405 which is looking good but I need more testing on it to give an opinion.

350-405 molds from NOE or Ranch Dog seem best. Rcbs also makes good molds and stands behind their stuff.
