Just curious. I am sure that it can be done just not sure if I need to use 22 mag or buy copper?

Some de-riming dies made for 22lr won't work well for 22mag cases and they will need to be trimed.

If you make a 65 gr using a 22lr case you will have a lead tip, but not too big. A 75 gr will have quite a large lead tip on it and made need to be shot slower as the tip may deform on firing or in flight.

Try CCI mini mag cases they are a little longer.

Yes, forgot those. They will make a longer bullet.

The mini mags? I would assume that the heavier the weight would make a longer projectile.

Mini mags longer? Don't you mean Stingers?

Utah Shooter

Yeah. That is right. I do believe I saw a video with a gent using them for longer HP's.

I also have Stinger cases lying around but am reluctant to use them due to the plating on them.

The heavier 224's I rather make from 22mag cases.

I have made bullets as heavy as 100gr using 22mag cases and even then I had to trim a little off. 17HMR's are another option by making up a trim jig you can consistantly cut off the shoulder area. I use 17HMR and 22mags for 22cal, 6mm, 6.5mm, 270cal & even 7mm.

+1

I have to trim off a bit of the 22 Mag cases as well. Otherwise they will not even fit in my Corbin (S) dies......

CCI also makes other 22 ammo with the longer case. I believe the quick shock it one, but I know I have seen others.

My 22 lr jackets with a 1 cal ojive with lead flush with the open tip is 65 gr. Stinger would be heavier and I have been able to form then into jackets. If you go to a 6 cal it ain't gonna happen, though.

@BOLLOCKS, It is just nickel plating I don't think it would hurt anything, actually the surface is harder than brass so you probably would have lower pressure.

Smoking 7mm or anyone else:

What do you use to de-rim the 22 mag cases. I have tried it in my Corbin S press setup with the 22 lr de rimming die, but never was able to get any good results out of it.

I have a set by danr, I use a smaller diameter ram pin. The 22 mag cases are thicker then the LR cases.

Yes the 22mags are a little thicker so you need a little smaller pin also a little taper on just the end helps (about .002 smaller at the end). I use the Dies I got from RCE and a walnut hill swaging press so I have lots of leverage. if the pin is too large I can run them through the die but cannot get them off the pin. I have smaller punches I use if I have to make the heavier 22's.

A smaller pin makes sense, do you have a diameter that seems to work for you? I have some extra pins and want to work on turning one down this week.

I have used standard federal 22 lr cases to make a lead tipped 70 gr bullet that looked fine. I am not sure how much more you could go though without the lead going into the sides of the bullet.
My rifle has 1-12 twist so they did not shoot well key-holing at 50 yds.

Right. I was more or less wanting an HP.

A hollow point would not be possible in a standard 22 case of 70 grs. however you will see that a soft lead tip opens very quickly.
