Evedently, the Lyman 4500 lubesizer comes with an internal heating element?

I shipped a ROCKDock™ order to a member in Sweden and thought he had the Lyman square heating element that sits under the press, but the he sent a pic of a 4500 with an internal heater.

Gollee I screwed up. Never knew they had such a gadget. Are these common?

If you mean the cartridge heater that slips into a hole in the sizer itself, my 2 1/2 year old 4500 is that way.

The 4500 does not come from the factory with the cartridge heater installed. You have to buy that as an accessory. The sizer, as it arrives from the factory, has a plastic plug covering where the cartridge heater inserts. This tubular heater is item #2745896, $42 and is made specifically for the 4500.

The accessory cartridge heater installs simply: pull out that plastic plug, insert the heater tube, and tighten the set screw.

I accessorized my heater accessory by building an outlet box with a rotary dimmer switch feeding the outlet. I plug into that, and can very carefully control the temperature of any lube.

The square one also DOES NOT come with the lubricizer. They call it their UNIVERSAL heater, that can be used with any lubricizer. It's also an accessory, item #2745885, $62:

I have the internal heater version. Pretty neat. Don't use the heater much but the price wasn't much more so I bought it.

Yes, $35 for the pin style heater is nice.

One more question...

Does the Lyman 450 also have a hole for the internal heater option, or is it only on the 4500?

Specs:

All Large Version ROCKDock™ systems have the Lube Heater Shelf as an option only. It's a removable version only. Please specify if you want one when ordering.

All Standard Version ROCKDock™ systems come with the Lube Heater Shelf included. It comes stationary- (standard configuration) and can be ordered removable. Standard version orders with base plates for the MEC 600 for an example, come supplied with a removable lube heater shelf (due to clearances).

The size of the useable space on the standard model ROCKDock™ base plate is approximately 5 1/2" wide and up to 6" deep, depending on the lube heater shelf. Lube heater shelf can be ordered fixed mounted or removable. Overall footprint is 8 1/4" wide x 7" deep.

The Large version ROCKDock™ base plate useable space is approximately 7" wide x 8" deep. Lube heater shelf is an optional item and removable only.
Overall footprint is 9 1/2" wide x 8" deep.

If it will fit there, it will work and can be mounted.

Bolt pattern for rail holes start from the front edge of the bench going backwards (on center): 1/2", 3", and 5 1/2". Wood cross members underneath can be counter sunk with a flat wood drill bit to accommodate bolts. Wood spacers can be put under a thin bench if the bolts are to long.

Maybe you could make a base that the cartridge heater from Lyman could fit in, so it could be used with other sizers, rather than using an iron, if the rockdock base was made thicker, and had a hole in the right place (directly under the sizer) then the Lyman heater could be used with any other sizer easily. A RockDock is something I'm thinking about when I build my new reloading bench, currently I have Lee's bench plate mounted on my computer desk, and it's getting annoying, as the wood plates compress around the holding bracket, and then you can't tighten the clamps enough to hold the plates in place. I was thinking of making a plate out of aluminium to fit in it, and then drilling it for the Lyman heater, but if the RockDock had an option like that, I would add that to my list for when I get the new bench made.

All that would need to be done is a machined block of aluminum, drilled with the heater element hole, that bolted on the plate. It doesn't need to sit under the lubsizer. Heat radiates nicely through aluminum plate.

I'm a big fan of LEE and use many of their products, but their bench mount is puzzling. I've sold many ROCKDock™ mounts to unhappy LEE purchasers.

The biggest problem with the Lee mounting system (other than needing to tighten 4 screws each time I use it) is the wooden mounting boards. The ones Lee ships with the system are just too soft! I made a couple of mounting plates that are some kind of hardwood, and when I mount my Tru Line Jr. press (mounted onto one of my homemade plates) it stays in place nicely. When I use anything mounted on the original Lee plates I have to check the tightness several times while using the equipment mounted on their plates.

Hey Pat, your working too hard. Need to get out and smell the roses once in a while. I wouldn't throw rocks at a new 4500 but an old iron of my wife's that had a bad cord (which I replaced) worked just fine leaned against my 450 --that is--until I sold the 450. Now I am looking for a nice 45 or 450 to replace the old one. By the way, do you make a rock doc for the old C-H 205 cast iron press to level it up on the bench? Like most of the old presses, it sits back at an angle when bolted down on the bench. James
