Let me start this story here- I got the .40 kick, and wanted a load that made major but would shoot lead reliably, no leading, and wasn't too close to max. Oh, and made major. I had several powders to choose from, but had 5 lbs of Hi-Skor 700X from back in the days of shooting trap. So I hoped to find a way to use that. After some load development, I found 4.9 of 700X was just right. so I made 1000's of them. They work well.
I kinda missed my old slabsides 1911's. So I wound up with a nice High Standard. Needed a load to dupe GI hardball with it. Turns out, 4.9 of 700X behind a 230TC does it nicely.
Wanted a load that was low recoil and easy to shoot for my wife, in a .357 snubbie. Fooled with a few different loads, but it turns out, 4.9 of 700X behind a 148wc is pretty good.
Got a pointy boolit for my .40. More bearing length, shorter seating, but it turns out, 4.9 of 700X is just fine.
Got a 200SWC mold for my .45. Yep, 4.9 of 700X is OK there too.
I have loads for .44 Mag and .45 Colt in 700X, too, but it takes a bit more than 4.9 in those cavernous cases.
Dang! Once I thought about it a bit, it seemed like that recipe worked in a lot of places. I wondered if I had run across Unique in a different can.
Anyone else got a powder or recipe that works in a lot of places?
Do I haveta put in the warning that you need to work up loads in your own gun(s) yourself and not just throw something together that you read on the 'net?

I started reloading for trap, umpty-ump years ago *cough cough*, and later when I did mostly handgun and rifle I used up my remaining Red Dot powder loading 45. Later I got back into trap again, and then recently used up a half empty can of 700-X with rifle loads of cast boolits.

It works great, and I would use it more often but... other powders meter better.

That is weird. I've found ten grains of Unique works in just about everything that it won't overpressure.

I've also found that 25 grains of Reloder 7 is an optimum charge for a whole bunch of things, but I won't get specific.

28-29 gr H4895 as a starting load in almost any (roughly) .308-sized case...i.e. 7.5 Swiss, 7.65 Argie, .303 Brit, 8x57, etc.

Also, AA#5 (Accurate's clone of Unique) in just about any handgun cartridge.

I've never heard of AA#5 referred to as a clone of Unique before. I must admit, it's at least close, tho I think better measured than Unique.

I never thought of #5 as a clone, as #7 is closer, but #5 keeps several of my smaller-capacity handguns happy.
I don't use Unique as much as I used to, but it will always be on my bench, oops, I mean, in my cabinet. Don't want to grab the wrong can, you know. lol
Have fun,

I just found today that 16 grs 700X under a 1 ounce of 71/2 works great for trap shooting.

I've use 700X in a bunch of handgun loads and shotgun now. It is a good powder.

Bill,

AA#5 is not a clone of Unique.

AA#5 is externally retarded by coating, Unique by its composition. Even though they occupy a similar place in the burn charts, the way they act in very small and very large quantities differ.

In particular, #5 will build pressures faster when compressed & overloaded than Unique, and is more position sensitive in oversized cases than Unique.

Both are fine powders with many uses, but Unique is more versatile for the reasons stated above.

i use 24.5 grs of aa 2230 in a bunch of cases.
the 223 with jaxketed for the ar's
the 30-30 with a 150 fn
the 0-6 and the 311014
the 308 with the 165 silh
i also use the 2230 in the 357 max and the 25-20
i almost tried it in the 375 win today but went with aa-1680 instead.

i use a lot of 16-18 grs of 2400 also.
the 308, 7.5,7.65,7.7, both x57 cases, the 45 and 44
i could go 17 across the board and be happy.
and i also use it in the 223 for light duty. not that much though.

i look at the 4895 powder's too it's the top velocity king in my 223 [with cast] and my most accurate powder in my 0-6 and 308 28.5gr [with a filler]
and with a 168gr boolit [no filler] in the 7 mauser it's extremely accurate.
could go across the board too with similar case and 30 cal sizes.
