hey can someone tell me what a Hartford collar is? thinks bill deleat this please

I'm guessing you are referring about the hartford collar on a sharps rifle. Well instead of having the octagon flats extend all the way to the face of the action they turned the last 1/2" or so round. Maybe to look better I guess. Other than that I have no idea as to why it was done . Frank

The hartford model sharps rifles (original ones) were made in Hartford, Conn. They cam from the factory with a german silver fore end cap and the so called Hartford collar. The Hartford collar was a narrow groove cut in the barrel just in front of where the barrel mates with the receiver. Why they put it there I have no idea as it provides not real advantage. When Sharps moved to Bridgeport, Conn. The made their rifles with a plain fore end (unless special order) and deleted the Hartford collar.
