Needed some more height on my Blackhawk front sight. This is a piece of orange insert that is just superglued in place right now.

I really like the way it looks in the sight picture and plan to get off to the range to try it out. Assuming it brings my POI closer to where I want, I am thinking about putting some epoxy along the sides and filing it to a better shape.

Anyone have any better or alternative ideas to make sure it sticks?

I don't think that orange insert will last and I would use metal. I have been playing around with changing sights and adding height. I think the easiest solution is to drill a hole(s) in the top of the sight and add a pin(s). Then, build up around it with LabMetal and file to shape when it cures. I have also tried the 1/8" key stock and it is a pain to get it soldered on, at least for me. I have tried building up JB and had concerns about it strength. I also tried shortening the rear sight, then deepening the slot again and the sight picture really suffered.

Of course the .595" sight Brownells sells for a few bucks is the right answer

Re: the Brownell sight.

Can you remove the old and replace without damage to the bluing? Any idea what they cost with installation?

Not sure if this helps any.. If you like fiber optics here is a inexpensive way to add them. From Jr http://www.castbullet.com/forods.htm

It does discolor the bluing as seen in the photo. The factory solder is tough to get to break loose.

Also, Ruger uses and alignment pin in their front sights. Once you get the old sight to break loose, it is a simple matter of dressing the old solder off with a file, scuffing the base of the new sight, fluxing, tinning, and re-soldering. Parts houses sell the paste flux and high temp solder with their welding supplies and I have had great results using it. I made a vise to clamp the sight to the barrel under spring tension. Once it is in place, heat till the solder melts and the sight sets. Quickly wipe the excess beads of solder away from the joint with a tooth pick and let it cool.

All my sights had marks from pliers where I was checking the strength. All held good enough that I had to file the marks away before I reblued the sight. Not the proper way to go about things, but they are mine and I take a bit of pride in fixing something myself.

Took my set up to the range today. Very much like the sight picture, and it did what I was hoping for raising POI.

The little light pipe stayed on through about 75 loads, mostly fairly hot 454424s. I have also had the gun in and out of a holster a fair number of times.

I am thinking I am going to build up the attachment of it with some clear epoxy around the sides and back. If it fails at some point, I can always take the more extensive measures that tek4260 (thank you) has illustrated.

If you use epoxy, you can add powdered graphite to make it black.
