This one followed me home. I have always thought that the 5" barreled S&W's were near pearfection

Along with the 240 grain Rem Semi Jackted Hollow Point an my choice for a SD load in the 44 that limits pentration to about the same level as 45 ACP ball and expands like a manhole cover

Nice gun. I have a 5" 686 with a non-fluted cylinder that I love. Best balance of any revolver I have handled.

You did good JWP.
My friend brought out an original 629 with a few issues. Cylinder unlocking and poor accuracy. I could not find a stronger cylinder lock spring but I found a tiny lock tumbler spring that fit inside the original spring---Cured the unlocking.
I cut the forcing cone to 11* and he shot a very small group at 25 yards off hand and is happy.
The only thing I never liked was the silly red insert in the front sight. Magic markers really help! 8-) Never smoke it, the thing will melt.

That's a nice piece, jwp! I really like the 5-inch barrel Model 29/629s. I think it's the perfect length for those revolvers.

JWP-FWIW the front site is easily removable and Patridge sights are available as are EDM fiber optics. I have an EDM fiber optic on one of my 629-3 Classic DX's in 5 inch bbl and it is one of my favorites!
Good luck with your new toy!

I agree about the red insert. The Partridge front sight is a better way to go for sure

S&W used to have a patridge sight for the Classics with a gold bead. I have one for my 29 Classic and it is great for most any use. Of course, IMO anything is better than the red insert.

If you'd like you can fashion a new insert out of black nylon with a file and press it in its place. Its a dovetail IIRC.

I have a piece of black stock just for this. I don't know if Brownell's still sells the stuff or not. They used to have black, red, and yellow.

I've got two, one newer one with the lock, one dash 2 because it was a steal, first thing done was replace the front sights with a .25 high patridge and the rear blade with a non white outline .126 high blade.
Good pickup, love my two. Saving the safety one for my nephew for graduation in a couple of years.
