Guy: someone fill me in on the "werefores and whys" of this design. It looks like it would be a good small game design bullet for my 221 Fireball.

If not tell me why, and what is a good small game cast boolit in the small 224 centerfires. I'd thought to just get some 40 grain plastic tipped 224 condom bullets.... This bullet seems like it'd be more effective at say around 1500/1600 fps.

I do my own gunsmithing work, and used a 1 in 9 twist Shilen #3 barrel for my homesmithed Fireball on a Remington 700 and a Brown Precision sporter stock.

What would work best from the experience anyone has had in this application? Even condoms.

I thought I'd just "Run-It-Around The Flag Pole" as we usedd to say in my VN era service days.

With a 1 in 9 twist you could use the Bator or 225462. The 462 is a little heavier (longer) at 60grs. The key is not too drive it too fast. For J words I used to use the 52gr N(word) BT bullet in my 221. I have and still do use the Varmint Grenades (IIRC 35grs. in my K hornet) but it has a i in 14 twist.

I think that the Bator is a great general purpose boolit design. It was one of the easiest .22s for me to get to shoot well. I use a HP 225415 Lyman for little varmint work because they shatter on contact so well, but for most other .22 center-fire applications, I still like the Bator about the best.

For small game you don't want the explosive effect we're familiar with in 22 varmint bullets. Or at least that's not what I'm after. IMO what you want for small game is to sort of duplicate the old 22WRF- a nice FN lead boolit at 14-1600fps. That's a bit more oomph than the 22WRF had at the upper end, but it's effective. The Bator should work fine for that. A 25 cal fn at similar speeds will literally cut a big gray squirrel in half if you hit a little high over the heart. Head shots work fine. If you meant varmint type stuff then just boost your speeds more and see how you like it.

From what I've read, straight wheel weights should work OK, correct? If I use water dropped wheel weights, what pot temp should I be looking for? I'm getting my first pot thermometer and want to start using it.

Has Lee fixed the problem they had with the bullet change they had last winter?

I had it grouping 1 1/2" out of a 1in 9" Stevens 223 with ww. No treatment was necessary @ a velocity close to 1900 fps.
