Does anyone know whose initials those are on the cartouches?

Were they put there by Sharps or by the Army? I ask because I also have a military rifle, and it does not have any cartouches on it at all, but I am sure mine has not been sanded.

I have a Sharps Borchard with original unsanded wood and it does not have those cartouches. It was rebarreled to 38-55 by Denver gunsmith Axel Peterson. It has a tang sight that is unmarked but identical to the one use on Officer Model trapdoor Springfields. The top of the receiver is stamped "J.P. Lower, Denver
