I stopped at Gander Mtn today and they were doing some remodeling. Most all of the reloading items are way overpriced. But did buy three pounds (all they had) of Accurate 5744 powder marked 75% off so was $7.00 per pound. Am starting to cast a Lyman gas check 200 grain for a mint military Remington 1903A3 2 groove barrel rifle. Am thinking this powder should be good for reduced cast bullet loads.

It is an excellent reduced load/cast bullet powder. 5744 gives lower extreme velocity spreads and lower standard deviations (velocity) than other comparable powders, e.g., H/IMR 4198, in every rifle cartridge in which I tried it. Not so impressive in handguns, though.

At that price I hope you bought ALL THEY HAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last I saw it was at about $27 a pound.

Works good in 1916 mauser 7.62 x 51 (7.62 NATO) With Lee 200 gr. boolit

Hardly any recoil

Me too! In spite of all I've written about milsurp powders & CB's in rifles, 5744 is my first choice for reduced [rifle] loads.

The price is normally much higher than SR4759 or 2400 so I won't buy 5744 now. Saw it advertised on sale for $180 for #8.

leadman, The price used to be what made milsurp powders such a bargain compared to 5744. I.e., we use them because they're cost effective and they [can] yield excellent results, not because they're the best for all CB loads.

Here in the Memphis area 5744 gos for about $25.00/lb, so I'd say you did very well.

You lucky devil!!! My 30/30 loves 5744 as does my .444. It is very versatile. Tomorrow I will be testing it in my 223

I am using 15.2 gr of 5744 in my 30/30 behind a Lee 160 gr Rn-GC boolit. That gives an MV of 1550 fps and 17" of penetration in soaked phone books at 40 yards. It is accurate enough that I can hit a pill bottle cap at 100 yards after calling the shot (yes, I had witnesses at NCBS, priceless. Could I do it again - Who knows)
The rifle is a Mossberg 464 lever action I bought as a cheap truck rifle not expecting much. Hmmmm. The last few weeks we have had a 170-180# tom mountain lion cruising our neighborhood so the Mossberg is what i carry cause I know it'll do. We know how big he is because our trail cam got him late at night in back of the house.

I am loading 5744 in 7MM WSM and 7 X 57.
In my Ruger # 1 14 grains 5744 behind 120 grain cast GC bullet.
In 7 MM WSM 18 grains 5744 behind 120 grain GC cast bullet. As I can only walk to the 50 yd range haven't shot at longer distances. My model 70 in 7 MM WSM is probably my favorite.

I myself have wanted to try it, but I have "NEVER", ever, seen it available except for special order!

Very sad to say the least!

I use 5744 in 300 BLK, 30-30, 308, 9,3x62, 9,3x74R, .375 H&H, .376 Steyr, .376/.416 Steyr Improved, ,416 Rigby, and .470 NE cast bullet loads.

Would have cleaned them out at $7 a pound!
