What exactly is magazine surge? I have an idea what it is, but I want to be sure.

[smilie=b:Never heard of it. Sounds like the way Obama won in Iraq, he sent more magazines to the locals. I'm sure he will get a Nobel Prize for his efforts.

I've never heard of it and I've been shooting since the mid 1950's when I was in high school. Where did you hear the term, and who used it? And in what context?

Never heard of it.

I had a magazine once that liked to spontaneously barf an entire stack of rounds, once upon a time. Does that count? :)

Never heard of the term either.

I had some Metal Form 9mm mags for my Colt Commander that would spew all the rounds out the ejection port if you seated the mags with the slide locked back. That gave me a surge of adreniline when it happened.

Metal Form replaced them with good ones.:drinks:

I would think that it is the movement of loaded rounds (forward, backward and upward) in reaction to the pressure of the magazine spring. As a round is stripped off in firing the spring is pushing the remaining rounds towards the feed end.

So if my guess is true then your barfing magazines are in fact due to magazine surge!!

I had a friend once that insisted that an M1 garand would fully function without a clip in the magazine. I took him up on it and made a trip to the range with some loose ball and my m1. Some how he managed to get all 8 rounds in the magazine and one chambered. He shouldered it, fired the first round and when the bolt opened it flung the other 7 straight up out of the rifle and it rained M2 ball for a second there. I stifled my laugh, he turned red, put the rifle down and walked away. We still joke about it every now and then. That is the day he learned that not everything on the internet is true.

Seen it happen to a well worn Mauser Broom handle pistol. With the internal magazine full from the stripper clip, the pistol emptied itself when ejecting the first fired case with the bolt in the rearward position. Robert
