I am new to the board and looks like a great place for information

I have been reloading for CAS shoots ie,30spl,45LC,and 45spc but now getting into some longer range events.

I will be usuing a new 1895 in 30-40 as my mid range calibre and will need to laod cast boolits for the shoots. What would be some good loadings including boolit weight and powders?

I use trail boss for the revoler CAS loads and Clays for the auto laoder

Thanks

20gr of Blue Dot with a 169gr bullet will get you 2000fps. I also use a Swiss made 4198 equivalent, 28gr gives me 2160fps with the same 169gr. There are quite a few loads for a wide variety of bullets on the castpics area. Seems there's never the bullet/powder combination I'm looking for though.

The Lee 309-200-R, sized .310, and loaded over 36 gr IMR4350 produces just over 2000 fps from my '98 Krag sporter (22" bbl) which comes awfully close to duplicating original (jacketed) factory loads.

If you would like Plain base loads, try 14 gr 4759 and pistol primers or for a faster load, 18.5 gr 4759, try both pistol and rifle with this one.

I shoot the 14 gr load in my Hi Wall with spitzer bullets and the 18.5 in my Krag with 210 gr 311299 type bullets.

Thanks, these give me some good ideas. I was thinking of using a 169gr boolit
Do you use gas checks on the boolits?

For the 14 gr load, you shouldn't need GC's above that, you will just have to try with and w/o them.

PS
If you use the 14 gr load, use softer bullets, no harder than 2% tin/WW

If you already have Trail Boss try 9gr to 14grs for a very acurate low recoil load,I youse 14grs TB and a 215gr .311 gass check bullet in a original 30-40 Winchester 95 carbine with very good results to 200 meters

Thanks all I may try the TB first as I have a lot of it May try the lower load with 169 gc boolit
Working up the load will be a lot of fun!

I always use a gas check if the bullet in question is a GC bullet. For my light load I like 12.0 gr Unique with anything from 178 to 220 grains. It should be fine with the lighter bullet. It is very accurate.

I am not sure I have settled on a best high-end load yet. But the most promising load so far is 42.0 grains IMR4831 with the Lyman 311284, which weighs 220 grains with lube & gas check. This is a factory/military equivalent load delivering 1,934 fps in the summer-time from my 24-inch barrel. With the soft alloy I use to hunt, I need to clean every so often to maintain accuracy. That's OK as I shoot the Unique load much more often.

I shoot close (Rams at 200 yds)Silhouette with mine, Browning made in 1984, 30-40 Krag.
21.5 Grains of Reloader 7, new or old stuff(with brown dots)
RCBS 180sp, gas checked, LBT Blue, or Carnuba Red, sized to .310, RP Brass, F210 primers, ths load will take down Rams used for HP pistol at 200 yds, will also take down Turkeys at 385M for 500M Rams I use 314299 sized to .311, and 23-25 grains of Reloader 7
I also use 41grains of IMR4350, but the recoil is stiff, better to hit them and not go down than to miss because of flinching..

Best 30-40 load to date is 311284/50/WC872. In a 24" bbl this will turn out 1,950 fps and has proved accurate out to 600 yards by several folks I know.

If you want something with less power, the same bullet over 16/2400 is a good one.
