What TC Contender G2 Pistol Caliber do you think would make a decent Deer stoper for 100 yards and less? I am thinking about a 30-30, 7-30 waters,
what is your sugestion.

I have thought about the 7mm Br, 30 herrett & 30 Bellm but they are not easy to find and probably would have to be custom made bringing the price up.

Since they don't make any of the short mag calibers for the TC pistol or rifle frames I can't include the 300WSM or .243WSSM that I love to shoot.

I have a .357mag, .44mag, .454casull and .45Colt revolvers so please do not enclude these calibers.

100 yards or less is a fairly low hurdle to clear, and nearly any of the calibers you mention will do the job, including the pistol cartridge numbers. The 7/30 Waters is probably one of the best Contender cartridges around for whitetail deer, with low recoil, good range, and enough power to get the job done. For 100 yards or less, all of the thumpers will also get the job done, from 35 Remington, to 375 Winchester and/or JDJ, to 45/70.

I also think the 7-30 waters is the way to go in the contender. But for me only in a 14 inch.
In a 10 inch my choice for deer is a 30 Herrett.
I have also used the 357 Herrett 14 inch on deer. The 35 Rem. would be OK too but i prefer the rim on the 357 Herrett............Terry

The 30 Herrett and the 357 Maxi are great for game at 100yds.

Any Contender with a 10" .30-30 barrel sufficiently accurate and packs more than adequate punch for deer-size game inside of 100 yds. Brass is readily available and comparatively inexpensive with a wide variety of .30 cal. moulds to chose from. (For whitetail, I'd probably go with one of Ranch Dog's HP designs.) Last, the 10" is much better balanced and more compact to tote than the 14".

Just my nickel's worth but, at different times, I've had more Contender barrels than I can recall, including both the 7-30 and the .30-30, and for general use, it's just hard to beat the .30-30.

[smilie=s: I have taken several whitetails with my 10"- 7mm TCU, using Hornady's 139 Gr. SP Spitzer. Farthest shot was @ 85 yds. Fell as if a semi hit him.

If you're looking at factory barrels and cast my preference would be .30-30 or .35 Remington. Nothing wrong with other calibers it's just the two are cast friendly and whitetail deadly. I have a sweet little T/C carbine with a 16" .30-30 barrel that does 1" @ 100 yards with 150 grain cast. It does just as well with jacketed.

I also have a Contender in a 7mm TCU and cast the Lee 130 gr boolit. It is an excellent deer stopper out to 150 yards. Not sure I would hunt black bear with it unless it is a little one. For that I have other barrels.

The 7mm BR, and WSM cartridges run at pressure too high for the Contender.

The 30-30 or 30-30AI would be my first choice. Both are available in factory barrels, along with the 357 Max. Even 6.5TCU is a good choice, or the 7TCU or Waters.

I took an antelope in Wyoming last fall at 255 yards with my 6.5TCU pistol. Full penetration thru both shoulders and exited, 120gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. The 30-30AI is more powerful.

The 357 Max in my experience is not as accurate as some of the other rifle cartridges, but should be ok for 100 yards.

I have a 20" 44mag barrel that was rechambered to 444 Marlin by David White comes with a 6 screw weaver scope base. Let you have it for $250.

It will drop any deer just fine.

Thanks for the offer but a 20" barrel on a TC Pistol may be a bit to long.

I am leaning toward a 7-30 Waters Super 14 in Stainless Steel not sure if they make one.

I have checked prices locally and seem about $370.00 plus tax is about as cheap as I can get a SS TC Contender G2 the price goes up from there.

I am also thinking of putting an Ultra Match Dot on it since I am going to keep the distance down to 100 Yards’ or less.

What do you think of this combination?

The 7TC/u is a good round in the 10" barrel.Mild recoil ,small powder charges and great accuracy. 120 and 139 grain bullets are easy to get while brass can be picked up for free at the range. I've used the 7TC/U to take several deer with both cast and jacketed slugs. A decent 4x scope and base can be had for the cost of the Ultra Dot. The Ultra Dot IS a good sight though! I just like the cross hairs at 4x for hunting.

I wish I had my early contender with my 30 and 357 Herret bbls back. That 30 Herret with the 110 gr RN Speer that Bob Milek suggested loading it with would destroy an armadillo at 100 yds and would put a perfectly round hole thru a piece of1/2" plate steel at 50 yds. Picked it up off of rail road track. Yep I really liked that 30 Herrett. (picked up 1/2" plate off rr track, not Contender)

Thats a mighty interesting looking little TC Carbine. Tell us a little more about it, scope, stock, load recipe, ect.

The stock is a Bell & Carlson Carbelite with the Natural Gear camouflage. Nice and light making an easy carry. The scope is a vintage Weaver K3 steel tube but alas it developed a crosshair problem and I've replaced it with a Burris 4x Short Mag scope (now discontiued). It looks similar but has a shorter tube. While my casting gear was in storage I got a bunch of Leadhead .310" diameter 149 grain gas check cast and loaded them up with 30.0 grains of H322. They chronographed around 2000 FPS and grouped under 1" at 100 yards without leading. With those results I figured there was no point in trying to improve things and have stuck with it ever since.
