I am sure that you will enjoy it as I do mine. the M1 is still a fine military rifle though a bit dated. I have fired many hundreds of rounds through mine with perfect satisfaction. By the Way thanks for your service to our country.

Looks like you did VERY well! Those high number SAs were always highly sought after as they are told to be the finest M1s made. Guess they got sentimental near the end and made the last of them the best they could.

YOU are going to LOVE that rifle!

I got my CMP SG SA in about 2000, not as nice as yours but I love her to death. With my handloads I am getting about 2 MOA out of her, not bad for an ol' war horse!

Since I got my first I have bought 3 more, you just never seem to have enough Garands around!

Thank You For Your Service. I know why I am free and I know who gave me that freedom and keeps it for me, you and the warfighters that came before you.

Nice. Very nice.

One of my buddies ordered 2 service grade Garands. I need to get off my butt and get one.

With a muzzle of 1-2 and a throat of 2, you got a very nice barrel. New barrels (commercial) have been known to measure 1. You are going to enjoy it.

Very nice rifle. Did you get some of the ammo to go with it?

Are you aware of the ammo requirements for this rifle?

I see many shooters at the range using commercial ammo in theirs with no adjustable gas plug. Now there are companies making Garand specific ammo.

I'm not an expert but don't want someone to get hurt or damage their rifle. I know I would hate to do something to damage my fantastic danish return.

Stay safe and thank you for what you are doing for us.

Yep, tear her all the way down and give her a good cleaning and inspection. You can download Garand log sheets online. Lube it properly, reassemble and go have fun!!

I don't know how far the CMP guys go these days in inspecting/cleaning them but it is good to do yourself. Not a bad idea to replace the op rod spring. I love Garands!

+1 on what mroliver sez.
I've bought several, had one that came with the op rod spring in three pieces. How it got past those guys at CMP i'll never know. When I called and explained what I found, They made me send it back and they went completely thru that rifle. They couldn't apoligize enough. The people that work there are a class act!!!!!
I'm in the process of building a Match conditioned M1 for my son in law. He just got back from Afghanistan. I plan on giving it to him for christmas.
Not to hijack the thread, but I need to send the trigger group out for the match mod, any reccomendations?

Hip's Ax, your post Number three, this thread, what block of numbers do you define as a 'high number SA'?

Not a snotty jerk, just asking. Garand lore is a long and confusing road for me. Just starting out on the trip.

Thanks,

salty

Take care of yourself and keep marking off that short-timers calendar!

A proud salute to you and your fellow troops, thank you all for your service!

When I got my Danish Garand I took it to a well known Garand 'smith to look it over. He measured the barrel erosion for me. There was none, the VAR barrel was brand new! couldn't be happier with my Garand.
Going to start loading cast in it probably this weekend and see how it shoots with that.

I have a Garand, M1 Carbine, 1903 and 1917 from the CMP and love every one of them, but the Garand is my favorite. Just recently started casting for the Garand. It shoots cast bullets as good as any other ammo and there are some good threads about CB loading on this site. Congratulations on your Garand. You'll get a lot of enjoyment out of her. A big thank you for serving our nation. We are grateful for your carrying on such a self-less endeavor. God bless America!!!

Salty, forgive me I have not been watching this thread much. Well, to my recollection anything over 5 million and especially any M1 around 5.5 million was always highly prized as a starting point for a NM Service Rifle build. Unlike M1903's there is no "high number block" that i am aware of. A lot of my knowledge has slipped away from me on M1's as I bought mine a while back and I tend to stop studying a model of rifle after I buy one and figure it out. Best place to learn about Garands and the CMP is jouster.com those guys are amazing.
