what is the joints made of in lead pipe ? i have read where people cut out the joins before smelting.

Solder: A Tin and Lead mix, amounts may vary.
People cut them out to preserve the Tin which is worth more and is good for building bullet alloys. The pipe is close to pure Lead and worth keeping seperate for the same reason, a known raw materials.
