i used to use 540 for my 9x21 135gr 1300fps load.......

right up till a writer, known to me, told me of a single incident of a pistol blowup.

canister powder, published load.....lot to lot variation caused a gun failure.

the powder manufacture REPLACED the gun..

( i do not want to hear wah wah, or bs or what if. the powder manufacture investigated and they replaced the gun)

here is some history about shotgun powders used in pistol rounds.
the powder must qualifiy for shotgun test , but not for pistol .
the test is called a closed bomb test...and no one does them. the shotgun test is simple comparison of the orginal lot to the current lot in shotgun use......
powders may act differnetly in higher pressure pistol round than in low pressure shotgun rounds.

there were other powders avaialble that were correct for pistol...i use them now.

is hs6 really the same as 540 ??? i do not know......but thought i'd drop my 2 cents into the mix.

I've never used WC 540, but HS-6 is a great powder for 9mm and midrange .357 magnum.

You may already know this one...but I will share a load that has worked well for me...
Loading for the .45 acp...I've gotten good results with 8.1 gn. Win 540/ 230 gn. FMJ/ CCI-300.
The Win. Components catalog 14th edition, 1994 shows this load as a MAX option, yielding 830 fps and 19,800 psi.
I loaded a bunch of these to use up a can of Win 540 I had from 12 ga. loading. Can't comment on grp. size or anything.. as I didn't check them in a match pistol from a rest, etc, etc. Shooting them offhand from a Colt auto...they performed fine. They functioned flawlessly when run through a couple of machine guns.
Hope this helps...
Cheers,
Don

I tried some HS-6 with the Lyman 190 gr plain base in my 357 94 Win. so-so accuracy for me.

HS-6 has really shined for me for kick ass field loads in the 2 3/4 12 ga .

I have burned up many a pound of HS-6 in the 45 acp as well. Its all I have used since about 1991.

good luck

I think I've told the story here before, but!

Some years ago a friend of mine, well an acquaintance anyway, showed up on my doorstep. He looked a little pale and nervous, but he handed me an almost full 1 lb can of HS 6 and said "Bill, you reload, right?" I said "Uh, yeah." He said, "Here, I don't want it." Then he turned around, walked back to his car, got in, and drove off. Somewhere in there I said "Uh, Thanks."

Later I heard that earlier that day he had blown the top of the cylinder and the top strap off his .38 Spl S&W. No injuries, though. I guess he blamed the powder, rather than his own choice of powder and load.

I don't use HS 6 much, but I did finish off that can for him.:-D

hs6 is one of the most accurate powders for me in midrange loads in everything from the 44 mag to the 500 linebaugh.

Its a great 3 3/4, 1 1/4 12 gauge powder. About all I use.
