View Full Version : Shortened Cruise Missile

Has anyone on this forum shortened a Cruise Missile mould to the bottom grease groove and using the last grease groove as a gas check shank?

Today I took one of my Cruise Missile boolits and chucked it in my lathe and shortened it to this grease groove. I then weighed it with a gas check and it came to 150 gr. It looks like the grease groove will be ample enough to seat a gas check. I think this would be a much better size for my Model 96 Swede because it will be able to be seated without seating below the neck of the case.

I'm sure that I am not the first to think of this and would like to know from those that may have tried it how it worked out?

Geargnasher did that to one cavity on his mould. I took a few down to the next drive band, came out at 140 grs.

The pictures are huge, 7.1MP unedited and they blow the screen width, so I'll just leave them as links. I did the work with a hacksaw, file, flat steel block, and some sandpaper. The grease groove shank might need to be reamed to better fit the check depending on what dimension you're sizing them. Anything under .268" and they stay on just fine. Enjoy.

geargnasher,
So how do they shoot and what are you shooting them in?

They shoot sideways! I've had troubles getting them to stabilize at any speed, I've experimented with them in two different Swedish Mausers from 1400 fps all the way up to just over 2K, they yaw something fierce. The boolits fit the throats like a glove when nose-first sized in a .266 tapered Lyman die, just up to the second band, and the GC was right as the base of the neck when seated to touch the lands, but I never figured out how to make them shoot in a Swede.

I've been having my first serious go at paper-patching, using this boolit in my .270. Had some success with it but still the random elliptical holes and fliers. Finally I used the right filler and things straightened out. You can see the elliptical holes in the pics I posted in my thread in the Smokeless PP section.

I've sent a few to a couple of different members, no real clear idea what their results were (Carcanos).

I shortened one too. More info here - http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=97395

They seemed OK in a Carcano, but I did very limited testing & never really got back to that project.
