Won't get much help if you don't specify caliber . Just saying .

How remiss of me........... 30-30, of course, but I do appreciate your judicious manner.

I see a Political career in your Future.......

Jerry, Don't shoot a 30/30 but found this thread here. Maybe you can find what info you require
on it.

I have used up to 13grs of Unique in the 30-30 contender with a 150gr boolit, but 10 to 12grs is much better as far as pressure.

Blue Dot also works well at the same charge weights.

Jerry! I don't find any loads in the Lyman loading manual showing 12 or 13 grs. of Unique. I would be very carefull with said loads. No offence leadman. The max load for any weight boolit is 11.4 gr according to the loading manual. I'm not saying that 12 or 13 gr is not possiable but I would lean to the caution and work up to any thing maximum or higher. Unique is my favorite cast boolit powder but I respect it as low volicity powder.

Unique is too fast to give you maximum velocity with that combo, with anything like safety, but it'll make a great reduced load. I agree that 13 grains is a bit too hot. I don't shoot .30-30 in my Contender, but if I did I'd be inclined to stay around 10 or 11 grains until I knew the load really well.

Generally speaking, you'll get much better velocities with powders like Reloader 7, even in the "short" barrel of a Contender.

Found this.......1937, maybe it was here. 7.0 to 10.0gr sounds more realistic, although, I starting to slouch toward 2400 after looking at the 1937 P.Sharpe reloading manual.

Good afternoon
What is going to be the purpose of the load ?
For target I guess it does not matter but if you are looking for a hunting load I would think you would be served far better with a powder like 2400. That long barrel has plenty of length to keep a firm pressure on a boolit base for good velocity. I would think Unique is done accelerating with in the first 8 inches and you are actually loosing fps the rest of the way.

Interesting observation, the Unique load outs are for paper punching on the cheap. Period.

As far as a Hog/Deer/2 legged Miscreant load-out, I'm a fan of AA2015 @ 23.0 gr, just loaded a bunch, but for sighting and pulp assault, I was looking at Unique, for fun and economy.

Thanks, Mike.

My experence with Unique is that when you get near the top, you start to get erraitic velocity spikes.

As for Unique being for paper punching only, a lot of dead critters didn't know what powder it was when they died.
YMMV

Wasn't My intent to be disrespectful, far from it..........

And Ira Hayes, yeah, I know the story, Johnny Cash had a great song in tribute, True Americans should be aware of............. one of the first victims of P.C., but an American hero, non the less, since forgotten, Truly sad.

I would not hesitate to shoot a deer using 11 grs. of Unique behind a 150 gr GC boolit at around 1500 fps from a 14" TC barrel or 10.5 grs behind a 170 GC boolit at about 1400 fps. Those two loads will shoot all the way through a 120 pound white tail. A 120 # white tail in Arizona is about the norm for a 4 point, western count.

The RCBS #1 manual and the yellow Loadbook for the Contender both go to 12grs of Unique with a 150gr boolit.

I did write that 10 to 12grs is better. I have not had any pressure signs with my Contender at 13grs. I neck size only and the boolit is slightly engraved by the rifling, so I make the most out of the chamber volume.
