View Full Version : Taracorp bar

I got a fairly large bar of alloy with deep TARACORP cast into one side
and a somewhat faint "133" stamped in the other side. The bar is around
6-7" long and about 2" x 2" trapezoidal cross section like a Lyman or
Saeco cast ingot.

Anybody have an idea what this alloy is?

Thanks.

Bar solder?

Could be, I suppose, but in that size it would be most likely for something like a large
wave soldering machine or similar where you are dealing with tons and tons of metal.
Not a normal bar solder shape, but that proves nothing.

Have you done a Google search for Taracorp?

I did a month ago for another question. Here's what I found:

Taracorp Imaco Inc.
Solders and fluxes
1690 Lowery St.
Winston-Salem, NC 27101

Toll Free: 800-334-5266
Phone: 336-777-8600
Fax: 800-637-6697

Web Site: www.taracorp.com (This site worked a month ago, doesn't seem to be active now?)

Hope it helps!

Looks like they're out of business, but Taracorp IMACO definitely made solder. It is probably a lead-tin solder. Is there any chance that the "133" says "L33" instead? Maybe it is 33% lead, 67%% tin. A picture might help.

Try melting some with a thermometer. Compare it against this chart from the melting point sticky:
621° = lead
563° = solder (90% lead & 10% tin)
529° = solder (80% lead & 20% tin)
504° = solder (70% lead & 30% tin)
464° = solder (60% lead & 40% tin)
428° = solder (50% lead & 50% tin)
374° = solder (40% lead & 60% t
362° = solder (37% lead & 63% tin) (eutectic)
365° = solder (30% lead & 70% tin)
392° = solder (20% lead & 80% tin)
421° = solder (10% lead & 90% tin)
450° = tin

Taracorp made magnum alloy for commercial casters 2% tin, 6% antimony 92% lead at one time.
Sad to hear they are out of business.
I am sure they made plenty of other alloys also.

I refuse to have anything to do with Google, they are evil, hate guns, actively support liberals with
their billions. Just cannot work with someone that hates me and everything I believe in and are
working hard every day to destroy the country I love.

However, I did use other search engines and found that it was out of business and then bought
up by someone else.

I figured someone here may have some inside knowledge.

Terracorp owns the name "Magnum Alloy". I am pretty sure that it is a different company!

AH! Taracorp for Magnum Alloy and Taracorp for solder.

And I know that the stamped number is definitely '133', large numbers, about 1/2 or more
tall, but thin line, not ambiguous.

Not sure I'd place much faith in what ingot mold they were cast into.
My last laod of 2:6:92 alloy was marked
BUTI
C414

Usually ingots are marked 2/6/92. All I can figure is I must have recieved some pirate BUTI by mistake. Maybe silver bars.

From years of experience reloading shotshells i can tell you that Taracorp makes the most popular shot for reloaders (Lawrence) I have been using their magnum and chilled shot for over 20 years. I had no idea the company had been sold.

Taracorp was a division of Lawrence Lead and made all sort of things, including several bullet casting alloys. They did marked an alloy they called "magnum" and it them composition as most commercial casters use today and sell as "hard cast".

I bought a 100 lbs of Taracorp magnum from NEI when they were still in El Paso.

I just called the phone number above:

TaraCorp Imaco Inc. was renamed Lenox Tools and then, more recently, Worthington Cylinder Company.

They are still in business and still producing solder and welding rod among other things. The best they could tell me was that it is a Lead alloy, which we already know. They have no records that far back and the guy that told me this had been with the company for 30 years, thru all three names.

One Last time: Terracorp with an "e" was a division of Mayco Industies Inc. (Lawrence Brand Shot) and the owner of the "Magnum Alloy" name. Mayco still sells Magnum Alloy to the bullet casting market.

Here's more on Magnum Alloy (Hardball):

The alloy was a joint development effort by Terracorp and Magma. The goal was to develop an economical yet effective replacement of Lyman No. 2 for the commercial casters.

Lyman No. 2 composition is 5/5/90
Magnum Alloy composition is 2/6/92

Terracorp copyrighted (registered) the term "Magnum Alloy". As others began using the 2/6/92 composition, legal battles ensued. The final court decision was that although Terracorp had rights to the name, they had no rights to the actual alloy composition. So the industry name for 2/6/92 has developed into "Hardball Alloy".

**********

Worthington Cylinder also confirmed that their prior company Taracorp Imaco Inc. had absolutely nothing to do with the devolpement of Magnum Alloy!

**********

You guys are unbelievable! I hope that clears it up!

MtGun44: Good luck with your unidentifiable solder bar. I gave it my best shot!
