After researching on the internet and solicating opinions here, I finally got a new tripod for my spotting scope.

I decided on a Vanguard Tracker I professional tripod. It is all metal construction including the head and most importantly the legs will adjust to three preset angles using a spring loaded detent, allowing a very wide footprint in high winds. The head is detachable, so other style heads can be used if desired.

So far the tripod has been rock steady in use, but we haven't had the 35-45 mph winds that orginally started me looking for a new tripod. The tripod weighs 6 1/2 lbs, will support 18 lbs, and comes with two adapter plates for mounting scopes, camera's, etc. Price was $159 at a local camera store, with Midway USA and other on-line stores charging the same price plus shipping.
