Looking for a mold for a .30 carbine load. I have a Ruger Blackhawk and a Contender. Will be using it for varmints and general shooting.

Timmylee,

I am looking to put together a group buy on a 6 cavity mold for the .30 carbine. The drawing will be done within a week and the group buy start shortly after that if there is enough interest.

There is a thread for this in the Group Buy forum.

There is currently a GB for Junior's .30 Soupcan, (.312 117gr FN) that ends in a few weeks (1/28), check the thread under Group Buys. While some don't like it due to feeding issues in rifles, it shoots great out of Ruger BH and Contender. All in all, one of the most versatile .30cal boolits around. For target or hunting, it is hard to beat. With my Contender, I'm about 1/2 way through load development on it as I wasted much time last year trying other boolits/bullets in it, but I've got it almost down to 1"/10shots @ 25yds with the open sights. You can get a 2cav from Midway, etc.
The GB Soupcan is a little bigger than the the mould Lee sells, but that's fine because many of Lee's commercial moulds drop undersized, it's no hassle to size it down from .312 to .310 or .309, and sized to .312 it will work in .303Brit, 7.65Mauser, and 7.7Jap.

There is a Lyman 115g bullet mould that works good in it and it also works great in the SKS/AK type guns and a few others.

If you can find one the Lyman 313631 works very well in the .30 Carbine (carbine, BH and Conteders). It is the 105 gr SWC GC bullet intended for the .32 H&R Magnum. If not the old standard 311316 FPGC for the high velocity 32-20 loads works well also. Both these bullets are my recommendation for top end cast loads used for varmint hunting. There are several other moulds that are RN and SP that work weel for general shooting. In my experience the SWCcast bullets kill a lot better than the RN/SP cast bullets.

Although originally designed for the 32-20, the 311359 is reputed to work well in the 30 Carbine. I would thing the Soup Can would be great there too.

I used the Lee 113g bullet and it gave me lots of trouble. because the curve of the bullet was not right I had to set them very deep to get the rounds to fire. The bullet was actually keeping the action from closing just a hair(not enough to notice) and if the action doesn't close the gun won't fire because of built in saftey sonthe round doesn't go off with the chamber not locked in!

I see you aren't shooting it in an actual M1 so don't see any problem with using any old thing you want, but in my carbine I can only shoot round nose or the pointy 311359. I use the Lee 120 RN but am looking forward to this group buy of a plain based type.
