Well, as it turns out I happened along at the right time. A local tire shop was selling their WW exclusivly to one person. That person moved out of town a couple of weeks ago and I happened in at the right time (third time I'd been by that place). Last Tuesday I picked up 2 five gallon buckets worth from him for $20.00.

After sorting one of the buckets this is what I came out with:

The left can is all stick on WW, the middle is zink, and the right one is steel, the rest was all good clip on WW. Looks like a very good ratio to me.

I also came across some oddities that maybe ya'll can help out with.

Anyone know what these are? They seem to be very soft lead so I tossed them in with the stick ons.

And there was also these:

They appear to be soft lead centers with some kind of chrome coating on them. Any of you ever seen these before?

Well that's it for now. . .OH, I went back yesterday and got another full bucket for $10.00. I'm thinking I've got a pretty good source for now. Hope it lasts a good long time.

Good score. I'm not sure that the stick on weights in the can on the left are pure lead. I've heard some posters argue over the composition but never really got a verdict.

I get them too and they seem to be some sort of spongy powdered metalic substance.

I'm curious about them if someone knows for sure what they are.

What do you do with the zinc?

Good score.
What do you do with the zinc?

Thanks. Not sure what to do with all the "scrap". I a real noob to this and this was my first ever score on WWs. I figure I'll keep the zink for trading it some day but I'm really at a loss on what to do with the steel.

I have a few pieces of the top piece in your last picture. I assumed they're lead as they're soft but I haven't melted them yet.

I took 60# of iron and zinc weights back to the recycler and he gave me $.40/lb. I was going to trade for lead but he was all out. So save them up! Don't throw them out and don't be bummed when a free bucket of wheel weights isn't all lead; they're giving you free money!! :)

I was surprised at this though. I told him I didn't want these but would trade for whatever lead or wheel weights he had on hand. He was confused. He said "Why would you trade those, you already have a bunch of lead in that bucket". I said no, these are iron and zinc. He took them and said "Sure as sh*t, it says iron right there", and grabbed a magnet and they stuck. How could he not know that wheel weights come in different metals! He's a recycler!! -Brad

The ones in your last pic that are chromed also come in a grey painted version. I had some in a small pot with all known safe stick-ons. The melted lead was a mess and required a lot of fluxing and skimming. I can not confirm that they were the culprit, but I am very suspicious of them now. I only see a few, too few to worry about, so I have tossed them rather than take a chance.

I would melt them seperately to be safe, until you know exactly what they are!

Pretty sure the wedge-shaped WWs are lead,
I never saw chromed ones before.
