ok here we go again...ive wanted to re-make my little marlin 444 into a 40-65 for awhile now but haven't been able to solve an issue that if not possible...then the project is null for my needs.

the issue is the capability of the action to be re-worked so as to work a coal cartridge thru reliably that measures 2.800 inch instead of the 2.550 inch that most marlins have for the max coal.

this means that grinding and smoothing the action to withstand another 1/4 inch or .250 inch reliably...anybody done this lengthening to a marlin and to this extent?

id like to hear if somebody has done this or another project that has lengthened the action capability to the needed length.

seems like i read in passing awhile ago where somebody did the grinding and such but i cant remember for the life of me where i read it...they say the mind is the first to go...the memory anyway...but they also said what would cause blindness too but at my age...all i have ruined is the prescription of my eye glasses...:bigsmyl2:..

if i could figure out the length thing then i may just leave the chamber n barrel the same 444 and be able to have the longer capability for 44 cal boolits as well.

so many things NEED doing and so little money and time...[smilie=s:..:veryconfu

Find the articles by Mic McPherson....he builds Marlins to accecpt the longest possible cartridge so that will tell you if it can be done. Precision Shooting ran his articles and they should be on the net somewhere....google is your friend.

Last I heard Mic McPherson could lengthen the action to feed cartridges up to 2.73". I have a Precision shooting article that describes how to go to 2.63" IIRC. The 2.73" mod takes more precise work.

I will have to look for it. I'll let you know when I find it.

I believe I read about Dave Clay building a 336 in 40-65. His business name was DRC.

You realize that 40-65 Winchester is based upon the 2.1" 45-70 case right? When loaded with 260 - 300 grain bullets it's overall length is no longer than a standard 45-70 round. There is no need to modify a Marlin 1895 to handle a longer cartridge. The 40-70 and 40-82 are a different story. They are based upon the 2.4" 45-90 case. The only thing needed to convert a Marlin 1895 to 40-65 Winchester is a re-barrel. As long as you keep the cartridge overall length to 2.550" you should have no problem functioning in a Marlin 1895 action.
