After posting a question for the best 30 cal Lee bullet mould I decided to go with the Lee C312-185 mould. does anyone load this bullet in the 30-30? If so do you flatten the nose for use?

It won't chamber in my 30-30, the nose is too big.

I have that mold. The nose measures .305 and won't chamber in my 94 Winchesters. I haven't tried, but I think it's also too fat for the Marlins. A better boolit would be the Lee 170 gr FP if you want to stay with the Lee molds. There's also a 200 grain . 309 diameter boolit in the Lee offerings, but it's a pointy type that would need some nose modification to be on the safe side with tube feed guns. Another great boolit for the 30/30 tube fed guns is the RCBS 180 gr FP if you want something heavier.

The mould I am using drops bullets at .302 on the nose and .312 across the bands, this is with air cooled WW

What do the bands measure? Specify the alloy, please.

Nose on mine casts .303" with wheel-weight metal, 675 pot temp, and mould hot enough to drop lightly satin frosted boolits.

Bands area about 313", but it doesn't matter because the nose is way too fat to chamber in any of my .30 calibers, have to nose-size it to .300 to get it to chamber in my .30-'06.

Boolits from WW alloy measure .313-.314 on the bands, .304-.305 on the nose depending where the measurements are taken. Can't remember why I bought that particular mold, never found anything it would work in.

It would work well in my 303 lee enfield and my pattern 14 303.
I ahve the same mold that throws a bullet with a 0.302" nose that works very well in the 308.

the lyman 311407 and 311466 are my two favorite bullets for 30 caliber. They work well in every 30 caliber rifle (and some 303 brits) that i have used them in.
The 30 caliber 185 grain lee bullet works very well with H335 powder in my m14, cycling the action and give 2" hundred yard groups. I am going to use WC735 surplus powder and see how that works....

I use the Lee C312-185R in my Encore 30-30 rifle. It is the best boolit that I have found for it so far. My mold drops them at .312 on the bands and .301 on the nose cast out of 3 parts WW and 1 part linotype. I size at .309 and they shoot good with IMR 4198..........Terry

Wonder how well it would work in a Marlin or Winchester?

Difficult if not impossible to chamber in the Winchester, nose too long for cycling through the action, of the Marlin I have , and the nose too pointy for safe use in a tube magazine. My Savage 219 won't chamber them either, at least with the mould I have.

It's been my experience that heavier boolits need to be seated so deep in a .30-30 that the heel of the boolit will stick out inside the case, bellow the neck. Some people have reported having success with that method, but I avoid it. It just seems like a bad idea to me. If you had a single shot .30-30 with a long throat, that might be a different story. I stay with 150-gr flat points in .30-30 lever guns. That's just me though. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks for all the information. I will have the use of a lyman 311291 and will make me a ran of these to use.

A capable Fellow like yourself hardly needs a multiple shot rifle, ditch those Levers and move over to a Contender or Encore, or perhaps a Mossberg SST.........[smilie=s:

You could try SmokemJoe's bump die to fix that fat nose.
Others have used it to solve that problem in the K31's, including myself.
