Hi Fellas
I'm in a bit of bother,I have a Savage Axis in .308Win coming and have a few scope choices to make http://www.shooting.com.au/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/unsure.gif
I have narrowed it down to these magnifications,I won't say what brand,as it might persuade you to say go for xyz brand http://www.shooting.com.au/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif ,but be assured they are from a top quality scope manufacturer http://www.shooting.com.au/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif

I'll be using my .308 for mainly hunting, pigs,Deer, goats, wild dogs, other pest animals, maybe a roo or two for meat for myself, close in and long range work.

I have these magnifications that I have chosen, can you please suggest one or two for me to make a choice on
2.5-10x50
3-9x50
3-12x50
or the one I like
3-12x56
I just want plenty of light transmission and the zoom capability,it is between these one's,which would you choose? and consider that in the last few years my eyesight has diminished (wear glasses most of the time now) http://www.shooting.com.au/forum/public/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif
TIA

I have had good luck with either the 3x9 or the 3x12. I have noticed that the light transmission is, for me, more of an issue in the upper power levels. Remember that the exit pupil size is going to the the objective lens size divided by the power, usually anything larger than 5 mm is overkill and you will not benefit from anything larger. if you will note the 9 and ten power level on a 50 mm objective lens gets you to the 5 mm level. My advice is if you can get the scopes together at one time, check them out and pick out the one the is most comfortable on the eye. If you a check out some of the same style and brand you may find that there may be enough difference to select a particular scope.

2.5x10x. At 1000 yards looking through a 10x scope the object appears to be 100 yards. The 2.5x will give you a larger field of view for close in shooting.

a 3x9 has plenty of magnification for hunting big game at any range. Another good thing is that 3x9s are usually the most resonably priced scopes in a manufactures line.

If you like that one over the other buy it - I assume you have compared - larger objective will I assume come with a 30mm tube so should let more light pass only down side weould be weight if you humping it all day. But if you are turning to us strange lot tell us

Why are you NOT buying the one you like and asking advise? [smilie=1:

Well mate
It's like this,I was going to go with the 3-12x56,but I think that it might be too big and I was asking you lot to see what recommendations I'd get,I am in doubt of what I cose,so will probably go with my first choice before I seen the 3-12x56,whick is the 2.5-10x 50,I know :groner:

I have two 3-9x40 sitting in my gun room, one is an old Nikko stirling and the other is a old Bushnell,I think.(it was on a gun I had bought years ago)could try them and see,no harm I suppose. :)

If I had the 3x9's sitting around, I'd try them first and if see need for more power then I'd buy the 3-12x56 - but if your initial reaction was the scope was too big for the gun then your probably right. It might help with dawn dusk shooting but if not having a problem with that part of your hunting then I stay with what you got.
