I have a friend who has twenty pounds of lead from some computor back up batteries. I read that this lead isn't recommened to use to cast. Whadda think?

Battery lead - aka shtf apocalypse lead.
It's better to bring the batteries and/or lead to the recycling yard and use that money to buy good lead.
Salvaged battery lead should be avoided at all costs. Since the advent of the maintenance free battery the lead content has been reduced and elements such as strontium, calcium and others have been added. Most of these elements cast very poorly, ruin a pot of good alloy they are blended with and are extremely toxic. The quantity and quality of lead from batteries is not worth the risk or the effort.

I wouldn't touch them. Breathing is fun, think I'll keep doing it.

Yep, Probably Toxic! Probably not much Lead either!
